After no luck on last year's youth hunt and several close encounters during the Jackson county and Madison county youth hunts this year, my son finally killed his first turkey this morning at our club in Jackson county on our 5th hunt this year. We had several turkeys get going before daylight and keep gobbling once they hit the ground. We thought more than once that one of them was going to come on up to an opening where we had our blind and decoys set up. The gobblers would get close and then turn and go away. We kept debating whether we should try to move on them, but around 7:30 we heard a couple gobbles behind us and got a couple responses to my calls, so we decided to stay put. Finally just before 8 o'clock, two jakes pitched in about 10 yards from us. The jakes gave us and the decoys a quick look and then started angling away from us, one to the left and the other to the right. My son and I were both starting to think that once again an encounter was going to end favorably for the turkeys and not for us because the path both turkeys were taking did not allow my son to get a clear shot at either. But then thankfully, the jake on the right turned and walked right out in front us at 35 yards. I asked my son if he could see it and get on it, and he said he was on it so I told him to shoot. At the shot, the bird hit the ground and hardly fluttered. He killed his turkey with his 1187 20 ga using Hevi-shot #7s - those little pellets are bad news for turkeys. Man it was an awesome experience. My season goal is complete and anything else will just be a bonus for either one of us. 15 1bs 5 1/2" beard 1/4' spurs

Awesome Congrats to both.
Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

Congrats on the fine turkey and the perseverance!

CONGRATS, I couldn't get my son up this morning, so I had to go solo.
