95% of my deer hunting is out of a climber . Basically all I hunt with is a 30-06. Obviously a 308 and 25-06 are plenty powerful enough to kill a deer or hog and kick less than an 006 but you are trying to drop a buck it tracks not shoot 200 rounds at the range with it. Not a fan of the 25-06. Always plenty of 30.cal components and variety 30-06 factory ammo in stock at the store too. If you are not a fan of the .25-06 for deer, I would bet you've never hunted with one. Kills way out of proportion to it's size. My longest kill ever was with a .25-06. 328 yards across a canyon on a 250 lb mule deer. Guide was watching, and said "well, we won't have to look for that one." Blood trails that are a pool under the dead critter aren't hard to follow. No telling how many mine has taken, and the 200 lb Texas deer my nephew shot went further than any other. It staggered almost 40 yards before it bounced off a tree and fell over. Most have died where they were standing. Only caliber I like better for whitetail is my .264 Win Mag, and I put the .257 Roberts in the same category as the .25-06. I don't have a ton of experience with the 25-06 . I hunted with a guy for 6 seasons that had one in a encore pro hunter. Every year he boogered up deer and we'd end up looking for it for 2 days. I'd say it was his shooting skills but a couple of those deer where hit in the good stuff. One year while we where planting I shot a large boar with his 25-06 sst combo sq in the shoulder at 30 yards and found no hog and very little blood. You can push a 150 - 165 gr 30-06 bullet at basically the same speed as 110- 120 gr 25-06 with the same powders.

Likely a 06 would have done the same on your boar. I had same thing happen to me on my first one to ever put cross hairs on. it was a 06 with 165gr on a 300#+ boar. Saw the dirt on his side fly off from the impact and never recovered him. Those shields seal quick. Since then I only take head shots and have killed more with a 223 than any other caliber.

I'm guessing that some of those issues are due to improper bullet selection.

Should've gone with the venerable .243 and a titanium super bonded TTVLD-X ATK Fanatic 6R5 bullets they just come out with.

If some manufacturer would legitimize the .25 Souper (.308 necked to .257 and yes it's spelled Souper) The creed fanbois would cry foul. My own experience with Neidners .25 (Dude who first necked aught six to .25) is the 100 grainers kill faster than the 117-120's course we used H4831 and I think starting loads got just over 3000 fps so no need to push'em up.

Are you saying that he was using Hornady SST bullets? If so don't blame the caliber being used. I wouldn't use a SST for anything bigger than a ground hog. The majority of the lost deer horror stories I know of involved either SST's or Nosler ballistic tips. And those horror stories involve a wide range of calibers.

I have heard this from several folks, and it just doesn't make sense to me. I have killed over a dozen deer with either the Hornady SST or the Nosler Ballistic Tip, with no issues. Most were DRT, no blood trail needed. I have also had them break bones on their way in and out.

The 257 Roberts would be an excellent cartridge for tree stand use but if you want a little more thump then the 35 whelen will absolutely Ground & Pound deer

I've never understood why anyone would shoot a .308 when you can shoot a thirtsumoddoughtsix and have the real thing. A .308 is one of the few cartridges I've never owned..
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Load an '06 to .308 pressures and then you'll see. Better still load 180+ grain bullets and it'll show.

I love my Browning lever action in .308 for treestand hunting, Handy little gun and the round has never let me down. I inherited a blr 308 several years ago and the dang thing will only fire about every other round. The firing pin just barely strikes the primer.

Time, for you to build your own custom gun to your spec's. look at northland shooting supplie's. they have remington action's already trued, along with barrels, remage nut, and lugs. my tree stand gun is a rem 700 in 308 win, trued action, xcaliber barrel light weight. if you really want to have fun build off a bighorn origin action. mine is a 350 legend, 6.5 creedmoor, 308 win, and 6.5 saum gap 4s. all using the same stock, and action. take's about 3 minute's to change calibers on the bench. just a thought.
