Take the back roads and avoid the interstates on your trip. When you use Google maps there is setting that reads "Avoid Highways" this will take you on your road trip on more scenic and interesting back roads. Back when we both rode our Bonnevilles, this was the only way that Mrs. Irish and I navigated. We call them the "Blue Highways." It's interesting to ride old roads that used to be the main thoroughfares and see old gas stations and hotels and even old roadside picnic areas where people used to stop to eat while travelling before there were 50 fast food chains at every interstate exit.
PS: Dismals canyon is pretty damn cool. According to legend Aaron Burr hid out there for a while after he killed that dickhead Alexander Hamilton.

Could also go up there and hit the Trace south and find the point you want to turn off to head home. We used to go to "South Sturgiss" bike rally in MS and then ride up from there.
