The system is broken. Raise and enforce the minimum GPA requirements for athletes to match all other students.
Quit giving handouts. It perpetuates the problem. Those who truly work hard can do all things in the United States. Those that don’t, protest. Amen.

Back when I was at JSU (early 90's). I took Oral Communications as my last class before graduation because I hated public speaking, still do. There was a black Football player in the class with me. One of his speeches was how he got admitted to JSU, scholarship, moving, etc.... The guy actually told the whole class he had to take the SAT's twice and they combined his two scores to get it high enough to be eligible for admissions. Had a Genetics class that three Football players showed up on the first day of class and then disappeared. I thought they dropped the class. Wrong,,,at the end of the Semester guess who shows up to take the final? No, that's not fishy at all.

That'll never happen because it will be considered racist since it would directly affect a disproportionate number of african american athletes, at least in football. In all honestly, having a kid who's recently played D1 football, I would estimate that making the athletes comply with the standard admission requirements placed on all other students, would eliminate roughly 80-85% of the current athletes on football rosters nationwide. Of that number, well over 75% of those eliminated would be black (demographics of most D1 rosters) and that is why it will never be done.

I guess I missed the part where they were all forced to play on full scholarships, have a valuable ( if not useful) degree and become millionaires.....but NOW there is a problem. SMDH.

I wish scholarships were eliminated. Recruit all you want, but just play the kids that pay to go to school.
We can eliminate the minimum 3 years in college. If you want to play in the NFL after high school, go for it. Keep college football just for the students Here's the problem with that... A) It will be labeled as racist. B) The folks who cannot pay their own way will still qualify for Pell Grants and such...like they already do now. Most of the players on scholarship now are also drawing Pell Grant money, too. C) I'd love to see them do away with the "sliding scale" to get players eligible who wouldn't be in college under any other circumstances, but see (A).

I follow some former AU athletes on Instagram and Twitter, Takeo Spikes, Ronnie Brown etc. and the level of racism that some of those guys spew has made me unfollow them. Takeo Spikes went on a rant a few days ago because there was a bill in the Georgia Senate dealing with hate crimes and someone got Law Enforcement officers included in to the bill and he went off. The picture he shared was from the "Players Coalition" and the first sentence read "We are extremely disheartened to learn that the Georgia Senate has amended the hate crime bill to include, as a protected class, police." Piss on him and every last one of them.

You forgot to include gold grills, iguanas, small boas and dope. Son used to laugh and send me pics of all the crazy stuff that would show up in the locker room a couple days after the Pell money hit. When you're on football scholarship at a D1 school, you dont pay for a thing. There are no partial scholarships allowed in D1 FBS football. If youre there on scholarship, it's a 100% free ride. Partials are not allowed for football players by FBS regs. Room, board, books, tuition, unlimited meals and snacks, workout clothing (dozen or so), t-shirts (dozen or so), shorts (same), hot gear, cold gear, all your tight-fit stuff (multiple sets), gloves, warm ups and sweats (two pair), hoodies (2 in fall), jackets (one), golf shirts (multiple), slacks, sports coats (one), shoes (3-4 pair), backpacks (one), umbrellas, hats (multiple), cash spending money through cash stipends (max of $5,000 actual amount depends on the financial strength of your program and what they want to pay out), all fully covered by the program. Literally a truckload of stuff, issued brand new to you, every semester. No cheap crap either, all under armour or Nike depending on who your school's merchandising and licensing agreement was with that year. To qualify for Pell grants in 2019, your total family income cannot exceed $50,000. Pell Grants are just another form of free money/welfare given to those that don't work or pay a penny in taxes, to be spent/wasted on stuff that wasnt needed in the first place.

Wasn't the case in 86-88 when i was in school. Dad was retired army and mom was a part time cashier...i was damn proud of that grant money to help me with commute expenses!

Things have changed a bit since 1988. Look at the world in which we currently live. ^^^^ This right here. Now if you only make $50K in total family income, you're not paying a dime in federal taxes with all the deductions and progressive rate structures, especially if you have children in school. Most athletes that are pulling Pell money now are putting about $750-$1,000 a month in their pocket in addition to all of the stuff and stipend above.
