I had the pleasure to take my brother, his daughter, and her husband out on the Tenn River on Monday. It was tough going with only a small channel cat at my first stop. I think the gar were mouthing the bait as we had lots of bites, but zero hookups. We moved up to the G Dam and tried drifting, with only scattered hits. But two guys in a boat with two large coolers were loading up on skipjack. If I was alone, I would have motored over and tried my luck (again). Left the dam and did some exploring. Our last stop turned out to be a flathead honey hole. We spent the next two hours catching 5 to 10 lb flatheads and never moved off that spot. Around 2pm, we called it quits because of the heat and we had run out of drinks. All fish were caught using cut perch as bait. They wouldn't hit a live one. I'm glad they stayed the extra day so they could see a part of Alabama you can't see from a road.
