A curb should be sloped back to the shower, water proofed thoroughly and use pressure treaded lumber. I never used wood. Always built them out of brick and ( mortar) wall mud. Seats the same way.

Guess I'll research what this Schluter-Kerdi thing is. I ain't callin the man. I need a project to do! Thanks. The best online source for tiling of any type is: https://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/index.phpI agree with the schulter system. But find someone who is comfortable doing it. I hired a guy who had only done a few and where he mudded the drain to the floor ended up leaking after 4 years. (had a 3 year warranty). In a fit of rage I tore it all out (7' x 8' travertine) and redid it myself. I worked for a tile company in college so I did it like we did then. Concrete backer board, redgard and took my time cutting tiles. Looks great and has been leak proof for 8 years. The guys on the site above can answer any question you might have.
I love my country, but don't trust my government.

Geez Stray, you got me worried about whether mine was done right or not! I kept a pretty close eye on the work the guy was doing while building the whole pan, but honestly I had no clue what I was looking at. I was just looking to make sure it appeared to be quality work. I know the process of him building out the pan/curb/sloping/drain, etc and getting it right was a multiple day job. Seems like he put a lot of layers - backer with red waterproofing, mud/thinset/whatever, then the membrane(don't recall seeing any screws/nails going into membrane), then more mud/thinset/whatever - I could be completely off on the order of what he did, but it didn't look half assed to me. I am on a slab, guess that's a positive. Anyway to just look at it now and try and tell if something isn't right with it?

That black wire mess will eat you up.... That’s metal lathe. Before backer board that was all there was for shower applications. And yes it will tear you up! Some wrap the curb with it for extra strength.

I just happen to be in a very niche profession. I investigate 150-200 structures a year dealing with construction defects, water intrusion, code issues, resulting damage...Isee a lot of stuff after the fact. 80% of my work is trying to help defend builders and subcontractors. Sometimes there is not defense. It is what it is.
