In 2007, my wife had a business trip to China and I tagged along. She was a Director for the American Hospital Association ,and AHA donated a new middle school to Guigang Province. We first flew to Beijing , then flew 3 hours southwest to Guigang. The next day we took a van a couple of hours into the boondocks until the paved road ended. We then walked a couple of miles on a dirt road with rice paddies on both sides. The natives of that area had never seen Caucasians q before. The men were 5’4” or smaller and the women were all under 5’ tall. Luckily, we had a Chinese Pediatrician who did his residency in the USA who acted as our interpreter and guide. Looking at a map, we weren’t too far from the Vietnam border, and in an area totally unknown to US tourists.
