Bad situation but if they hadn't been breaking and entering nobody would have been shot.

And where this took place, they had to make a hell of an effort to attempt the break in.

Yeah, breaking into a camp at 4am where people with guns are sleeping is going to end bad no matter what.

I feel for the girl and her family. Although she knew what she was doing was wrong, I doubt she was the instigator in the act, but she is paying the price. Poor parents...

Thats a very remote location on an island in the middle of the river. I figured the Govt owned the property - how can you have a camp there?

Must be private owned, at least part of it, or they may have leased/deeded access to build.

http://www.fox10tv.com/dpp/news/local_news/baldwin_county/questions-cloud-gravine-island-shooting

“It is being alleged that the shots were a warning type in nature, but we are still investigating what that was,” Sheriff Mack said.

And now the atty for the family holds a presser: http://www.fox10tv.com/dpp/news/local_ne...island-shooting

Stankowski also said he received information that the men who fired shots Sunday may not have permits for their weapons.

WHAT? Permits? Last time I checked, you didn't have to have a permit for a pistol unless you were in a car or carrying it concealed. Holding it in your hand while running down burglary suspects is neither...

I don't know if the atty is ignorant or phishing...

Gravine was developed from the sand from Dredging. Not sure who actually owns it.

So if the camp owners are not supposed to be there and do not have title to the property....???

The land is owned by the corps of engineers and is leased, some of the fish camps in the delta are on private land. The camps are privately owned,my boss has a camp in the delta,I personally know one man that has a camp on gravine island,I saw his camp on one of the news stories,I have not talked to him so I don't know if he was involved or not. There has been a problem with break ins lately in this area,so this ain't the first time a camp has been burglarized in this area.

Be safe & have fun

This is going to continue to be bad for all involved and it appears to me the press register is doing all it can to turn it into a case similar to the one in Florida (just look at the comments they have stirred up). The men that broke up the robbery could have been any of us that spend time on the river or at our hunting camps. I applaud the Sheriff's office for not releasing their names while the investigation is on going.

I own property near there. Owners have been really upset with the rash of thefts recently in the area. Our boat dock has been hit twice this year. Sad for the girl, but the kids shouldn't have been there. Hope she recovers.

Only the northern part of the island. I'm pretty sure the bulk of it is natural.

That beautiful girl made a bad choice. I hope she pulls through, but it doesn't sound good.
I feel sorry for the shooter. frown

So...if she dies do they charge the three teenagers with murder since one of their alleged members was killed during the crime?

This right here.

There is so much crime going on these days I just don't think young people comprehend what could happen to them. Young kids being stupid and the worst that could have happen did. Prayers for the family and the young girl.

Doubt it. Seems most laws benefit the perps more than the victims these days. Being teenagers I am sure there will be leniency, as there probably should. I am sure if the shooter(s) knew it was teenagers there would have been no shooting. For all they knew it could have been gangbangers or meth heads.

Back in the 80's my grandfathers business kept getting broken into and stuff stolen. He hired a guy to spend the night in the shop for several weeks. The hired security caught a guy one night climbing through the back window. When told to freeze the perp cussed him. Needless to say the security person shot him in the chest with a 12 gauge of #8's. The guy ran and they found him later at the ER, he lived. I don't remember if any charges were brought, but I know none were against the shooter.
