My GF took her RAV 4 in for an oil change and they told her that since I had replaced the front brake pads with non Toyota brand it had damaged the rotors, I have never heard of this before. I wonder if the toyota brand rotors and pads are softer then non-oem. I need to change out two rotors and have two turned according to them so I mine as well just replace all 4 and the pads. What are your thoughts on using non-oem parts say from NAPA?

Thank you

Take the tire off and look at the rotor. See if they are smoking crack. I have never heard of damaging brake rotors with any sort of decent non-OEM pads.

My little home town parts store can get premium AISIN brake pads, same as comes on Toyotas from the factory. They aren't very expensive either. Rotors aren't to expensive either.

Was it express oil change ? If it stops fine with no rotor shutter when she mashes the brake pedal i would run it .. express oil change gives the mechanics commission on that the sell thats why u always need somthing when u go in there

That's not uncommon. As long as they are honest, not a problem. This situation sounds like bull do doo. The only reason any shop does oil changes is to inspect other items. You can't pay the rent on oil changes. No money to be made on them. Unless you're like Express oil and do 50,000/ month.

Yeah, you are probably right. I do my own unless it's the first few that the dealer does. Even then, I'd rather do my own.

It's hoover Toyota and I really do not like them. They check the brakes every time they do an oil change, they actually have a whole list of items they "inspect" while doing an oil change. I have always changed my own brakes except for the times I was sick or had hurt my back. I suspect revenue is down and they are trying to make it up anyway they can. I am going to get the parts and do it myself, it really is easy on the RAV.
Thanks

son took his car to Express Oil Change & was told 3 things needed repaired/replaced. I told him to take it to Windom on 280, where i knew he would get honest service.
They said only 1 thing needed repaired. Screw EOC!

My wife has never had an oil change where they didn't try to pull BS on her. I halt it in it's tracks every single time.

A good EOC story. A friend of mine just recently took his Tundra to Express to see about a clunking sound in the front end. Told him he needed new control arms, shocks and a few other things that totaled around $3,200. He let them replace the control arms to the tune of $1200. Didn't fix the issue. I referred him over to my mechanic and come to find out all that it needed was the transmission mount tightened up. My guy didn't even charge him for that. Also found out EOC didn't align the front end after replacing the control arms. He went down to EOC and tore them a new one.

I was once told that my 95 Tahoe needed the brake fluid changed and a fuel system flush.
I said, "man that's great news. That truck has 250,000 miles, and I'm very happy to know that you couldn't find a damn thing wrong with it".
I walked out laughing.
