2 years ago i shot what was possibly the first Cackler which was banded and recovered in the state of MS. This according to USFWS banding lab. They are traditionally west Texas and Oklahoma wintering grounds. This duck season will not play out well through early December at best...the stars are not lining up. Glad we quit duck hunting and converted to specks more than ever these days listening to all this.

I’m hearing of some switching over to Specs and can’t blame anyone. I’ve just resorted to fewer hunts and hoping for a good day every now and then.

I have seen some cacklers on the NW corner of AL years ago. A single and then 4 up a creek we flushed when we pulled in and they flew right over us. Not much bigger than a mallard if that. I’m thinking those 2 times were after strong winter storms sweeping thru Texas.

This year will be my 36th season and I can really tell a difference looking back thru the years.

Hearing good reports for the opening in Arkansas. I’m sure with this warm weather Saturday will be banging with everyone shooting their honey holes and Sunday ok and then stale until weather changes. I know several people who target just specs and love to play with them myself if I have a good place to hide it’s kind of like hunting turkeys that fly and they are my favorite waterfowl to eat. We certainly need another front like we had in early October to help us here next weekend. Good luck to everyone and shoot some birds.

I forgot to add that we killed 4 cacklers in Arkansas out of a pit about 12 years ago on a cold windy day and they were the first I had ever seen except in Canada. Only reason we got them was one of the guys I was with had his Canadian call in his bag and he called as soon as we saw them and they committed suicide.
