The merganser thread made me wonder if there were canvasbacks in Alabama. I shot one in California and wish I had it mounted.

I believe they have been killed to an extent in north Alabama. I saw one once in the delta, but I have only hunted here a few years.

Guntersville holds decent numbers, as well as wheeler.

Not last year, but previous years we have been slammed with them. I remember first ones I saw early 90s. Guy I was hunting with hit 2 with 1 shot. I thought that was the chit!.

Funny thing, I was looking through some old hunting pics this past weekend and found the pic of Chad standing next to the tailgate after the hunt with my dog showing off the haul. Man, good times.

Killed plenty of Cans on Guntersville. That was about 8 years ago.

I killed 2 drake reds in one shot a few years ago. The entire flock sat down when the 2 hit the water. Drakes and hens swimming around and I had no clue if I’d killed drakes or hens. Debated shooting since I wanted a nice one for the wall but held of. Dog broke and came back with both drakes. Ecstatic was an understatement.

Killed a nice Can on Guntersville. Took 3 trips with a well known Can killer to get one. I was bad jinxed. Since breaking the ice I’ve killed a pile of them.

Yep. Up around here we've held good numbers of cans for a while.

What year were they closed completely? Was that 2008 or 09?

I hunted lake Catahoula and we were covered up with them. Hundreds swimming in the decoys.

Cans closed for a year or so around that time. I think the federal count lost them as they had moved further north to nest that year.
They were closed for some time and opened agin around 2000 or so

Good looking Can!

It may of been closed around then, but I want to think they were closed off some years before that, too. I remember being about 8th-10th grade and going hunting with dad, we'd be covered up with Cans, but not allowed to kill them. That would have been around 2001 - 2003 or so.
