I always heard plant Chufla June or July - that sound right Clarke county? Do I spray it and if so - when? I only hav 30 yard wide by 65 yard long field I was going to potential plant chufla n. This is a good deer spot - not sure if planting Chufla will ruin it. My boy likes deer more so I may not plant but I will hav corn there thru deer season. Will Chufla ruin as a deer spot even if I hav corn out? This field seemed a little less effective for deer late season this year cause turkeys moved in so hard - I had lot of clover here this year and turkeys dominated this field jan thru March 15 every day - then left

Is a field that small a waste of time for Chufla ? Field is at the heart/center of my 250 acre property

Tired of seeing turkeys leave week before turkey season every year

First question, do you have hogs on this property at anytime? If the answer is yes, do not waste your time or money. I planted 8 plots my first year we had our lease and the hogs got everyone of them. We just plant clover now and lots of it.

If you do not have hogs, the area you described will be sufficient to plant. Mother nature and your turkey population with determine if you make/have enough chufa left come spring to hold your birds. They will start using the chufa plot once it matures in early fall and not let up until they are gone. I like to plant my in June to take advantage of early summer rain. This has worked best for me on timing over the last few years. Most folks plant in July and this can be hit or miss depending on the amount of rain we get. I have started using a pre-emergent before planting and it has helped control weeds and grass. Prowl or Treflan are good pre-emergent and safe for chufa. Prowl does not require it to be incorporated into the soil but will need a timely rain after application. You will need to incorporate Treflan in the soil if using it.

Broadcast plant 50 pounds of seed to the acre and 300 pounds of 17-17-17 per acre and cover. Pray for rain and keep an eye on your plot. Once you start seeing weeds and grass spray with Clethodim and Milestone for grass and broadleaf control. Around the 60 day mark top dress your chufa will 200 pounds per acre of Ammonia Nitrate ahead of rain. At that point you need rain and keep an eye on the weeds. You might have to spray again before your chufa mature.

I like to use 10 oz of Clethodim per acre and 2 to 4 oz per acre of the milestone. Use 16 oz of 80/20 Non Ionic Surfactant in this herbicide mix.

Pictures of my chufa plot following the above advice I’ve received over the years from our very own chufa expert “PCP”. He has given me sound advice and I listen when he speaks. I still have chufas left in this plot as I don’t have enough turkeys to eat what it made. They are in every single day though.

That's .4 of an acre, and will produce a lot of chufa if you manage it with intensity. Start by getting a soil test now, get the lime out soon, and go ahead and break the field as deep as you can with a turning plow. You can plant from May through July, but I have found I get the best chance of rain at the right time by planting around the first of June.

Milestone is good for broadleaf control. You have more choices for grass, but Clethodim is probably cheapest.

Don't bother with a patch this size unless you are willing to really do it right and try to make max yield. And also know, that no matter how many chufas you make, they will always leave them to go to corn. Good luck!

I've grown it for years by getting my plot ready and then letting everything sprout up and then spraying with roundup. Then I plant with my JD 71 planters and let it go. My biggest problem is Florida pusley and roundup knocks it back pretty good. I have a little junk sprout up where the tractor and planters stirred up the dirt and usually run a cultivator thru it once or twice. My plots aren't near as pretty as yours and PCP's but they make chufa.

The only experience I had with a chufa plot that size was that the turkeys had eaten all of the chufas by the time deer season rolled around

Squeaky, how wide are your rows? I have an old covington 2 row on 36", feel like that will be to wide.

Those are on 30” rows. Your planter should be fine on 36” rows. The biggest issue would be a big enough area to plant on that row spacing. I personally feel like planting in rows has produced more chufa for me. I can take care of my plot better without running over my plants when spraying and applying fertilize.

I was thinking about removing a couple of sweeps and that way I could plant the middles between rows. Do you think 18" spacing would work good?

Bumping this back to top. Any of the Chufa Pro Staff have luck discing last years chufa plots to stimulate regrowth or do you replant each year ?

Kendall yes this can be accomplished. PCP had posted on this subject several times over the year. I made so much chufa last year that I could have easily established a great stand of chufa. The issue is you have to disk them multiple times to thin out the stand. Mine where coming in very thick after tilling them the first time. My 2nd attempt to till almost resulted in running over a hen and her poults so I had to stop. I am going to just replant at this point as I needed to till at a minimum of 3 to 4 times to thin out the plants.

You will be good to go if you can keep an eye the patch and work it when needed.
