I know this is going to get bashed on here, just like anything that goes against the norm, but even though I can't see myself buying one, I think it's going to be a big hit with certain segments of the market.

Bold move by Ford for making the base engine option a 2.5 liter hybrid that gets 40 mpg, however if you want 4WD you have to go up to the optional 2.0 liter turbo, but when you do you get a 4000 pound towing capacity and a 2000 pound hauling capacity. Pretty impressive numbers for the smallest truck produced by a US company since the first Ford Rangers came out. Plus it gets about 3x the mileage of those trucks and more towing capacity too.

Get one of these in 4WD and it would do 90% of what most people would need a truck for. I think they are going to sell a lot of them... Starting at only $19k brand new.

Funny thing about this picture is that the plywood would be a pretty sizeable down payment on the little truck...

Hell... The last Ford Ranger Stepside I had, a piece of plywood wouldn't sit flat in the bed. The interior dimensions of the bed was like 47" wide. I was like, "When you designed the bed, you couldn't have just made it wide enough to fit a standard piece of 4' plywood?"

Nice underseat storage...

Looks like it’ll be about the size of the early 4-door Tacoma’s.

In the picture with the plywood, I thought the tailgate doesn't fold all the way flat, but apparently it does...

There must be two positions on the tail gate: Flat and a second position that lines the tailgate up with the tops of the wheel wells so you can haul large sheets of plywood or sheetrock.

I think it has as at least as much room in the bed as my old 2001 Tacoma club cab.

Judging by the pictures, they must have done a lot of consumer focus groups to find out what kind of stuff that people wanted in a small pickup truck.

Yep... People would have to get over the fact that it is a unibody construction and a FWD platform. I would imagine that the 4WD with the 2.0 turbo would be a pretty good performer.

Hell, it's even got a beer bottle opener built into the tailgate...

“If it can’t tow a bulldozer over a mountain at 80mph, I ain’t want it.”~Aldeer

I’m also of the opinion I think it will sell well.
$21,000 for the XL with as high as new vehicle prices are is a steal.
A lot of non tradesmen need bed space occasionally but not necessarily heavy weights or towing.
Though I think it’s really an oversight on their end not to offer AWD on the hybrid variant from the get go.

I love my current Avalon and wouldn’t buy first year production but wondering about it as a replacement daily driver when that time comes.
But when it comes down to it, I trust Toyota more than Ford for a trouble free ownership experience.

It gets similar mileage and priced roughly the same as a Toyota Corolla, that is pretty damn awesome.
Long term reliability remains unknown as compared to a Corolla.

It may have a 4000lb towing capacity, but I’m not sure I would trust it pulling a 23’ bay boat every weekend. I think cabin space is going to be the biggest factor in whether it sells or not.

I read that the cabin space is as big as big if not bigger than most mid-sized trucks.

The reviewer guy is a bit goofy, but this is a good walk through and explanation of the features...

Then step up in size, there’s always something larger.
If towing is a routine thing, it’s not the best choice.

Need to take the riding mower or ATV in for a repair/annual service? Perfect
Small pop up a few times a year to a state park? Perfect
Need to go grab some plants from a nursery? Perfect
Help move across town/college kid into a dorm? Perfect

I agree, I think it has that capacity if someone might need it on occasion, but honestly I don't think Ford is marketing this little truck to people who own 23' boats or campers, horse trailers, etc...

Maybe folks with a little 14' to 16' boat, a little skiff or a runabout, a popup camper, a utility trailer, etc... Those are the folks that Ford put that towing capacity for.

Its built on the same platform as the Ford Focus...not sure about a truck built on a sedan platform.

I don’t think that’s correct, the Focus part.
I believe it’s based on the Escape/Bronco Sport platform which are the compact FWD unibody SUVs.

The Focus I believe hasn’t been in production(North America) for several years now

It would meet all my current needs nicely. Next year I was looking getting a used car. I will keep this in mind.

No thanks. I like big ass trucks with a big ass motor. Have I mentioned that I also like plowing on a big ass tractor? And offshore boats with multiple outboard engines. grin
