I’m curious to see what happens whenever the computer chip shortage ends and all these new trucks sitting in a field waiting for a chip finally make it to dealerships.

Something that hasn’t been mentioned is how long people are financing vehicles and how low the interest rates are.
Many people are shopping a payment, not too concerned with the total. Without a doubt that’s why vehicle prices got to where they are now. As long as the banks and finance companies work with brokers, you can expect loan lengths to increase to get those payments where average folks can afford them.

I have a 2016 with 75k miles and with the equity I have in it, looking to cash it out as it makes financial sense(I think). Only problem is getting a replacement. Current prices would put me at about $67k to replace it. The $20-$25k I come out ahead would put me right back where I was 3.5 years ago when I bought it, about 40k financed for another 5 years. Albeit in a new truck. Not exactly sure what to do. This is me. I put my Tundra on the market just because it is "worth" approximately 10k more than I paid for it. Had a couple of dealers call me about selling, but no bites. I'm in a good spot, my truck is paid for. I don't have to sell it, I'm just looking at doing some stuff to benefit me financially.

It's a repeating cycle. 0% percent interest. Keep lengthening the terms of the loan, keep raising the price. They don't give 0% loans out of the goodness of their heart. There's a reason most of the car makers are also in the loan and credit business.

Hopefully used cars will be cheap once the market is flooded with new vehicles. I heard and idk if it’s true but it will be 2023 before the Chips are here. Yep... Used prices will fall. Firstly... The dealers are making money and staying afloat right now with used cars, but the manufacturers aren't making anything. Once the dealers become flush with new vehicles, then the manufacturers will be pushing incentives to all their dealers to move new vehicles to bring in revenue. Secondly... Once people start buying the new cars with incentives, they will be trading in just as many used cars and used car trade-ins will flush the market and used prices will go down. Thirdly... With all the nice used trade-ins becoming available, older used car and truck prices will fall, because everyone will either be buying from motivated sellers or trading theirs in too to get one of the good deals on newer trade-ins.

I am in the market for a 3/4 ton truck. I really need it soon but I would like to try and get by for a few months to see if prices will drop. If my house sales I may pull the trigger on a 2021 F-250 XL crew cab 4x4 with 6.2 gas burner for $45k. Or I may chicken out.

I'm going to ride my piece of crap out and wait and see if this bubble will burst.
I think another factor in the market is that cars generally last longer than they did 10-20 years ago. People aren't forced to buy new ones every 3-4 years. I think that's also contributing to the insane prices of 5-6 year old trucks with over 100,000 miles. They still have a ton of life if they have been cared for, and people know it. They are going for 75% of the cost new 5-6 years prior.

I have no idea what will happen with truck prices in the future but they sure are insane right now. Twenty five years ago I bought a nice house and 10 acres of land for 68 thousand dollars. Now that's what a 4 wheel drive truck costs.
