They keep scheduling teams that were good back in the '90s. It's like watching Tyson Fury beat up George Foreman.


Bama doesn't pick their opponents in these "kickoff classic" games. The Chick-Fil-A bowl committee (and I think the Cotton Bowl committee in Dallas) chooses the opponent. They attempt to get the best matchup they can.

In 2019 when Bama opened vs Duke, Clemson was offered the game...they turned it down, as well as two or three other teams from the ACC.

It's a two way street. A lot of teams don't want to play Bama in the first game of the year.

When you're limited to an ACC opponent in that game, the choices of quality opponents are low.
