Last week I was on a video conference call with 3 Federal Public Defenders who have a client in common with me. They are representing him on “Felon in possession of a firearm” charge in which he is facing a maximum of ten years in prison. They are all pumped up and preparing for trial and we’re discussing trial strategy, they were all giddy as if they had a high profile case. I get these charges dismissed on a regular basis with the State.
The charge that I’m defending him on is Murder and carries a maximum of life in prison.

I've only seen a few cases where I thought a cruelty charge was warranted. Supposedly the parties involved filed reports, but I've never had anyone contact me over them. Most were domestic situations, so either they got cold feet or law enforcement didn't feel it worth their effort. I'd imagine it's more the former.

It’s NPR so who knows could be 100% incorrect but I promise they will pursue these charges harder than they would half the crap you did to a human. Definitely not something I would joke about online and then somehow down the road get videoed doing something stupid for instance.
