Just wanted to share with y'all a little project that I've been working on. This all started over 2 years ago when an old friend gave me a bow that his neighbors had thrown in the garbage. This bow was an old Jennings Gale Force. I had been wanting a new tournament bow but just couldn't afford one, when the idea hit me that I could turn this bow into a new tournament bow. By that I mean to sell my way to a new bow. I created an ebay and paypal account just for this project. I put an old tm hunter rest, a Keller pendulum sight, a quiver and 8 easton xx78 arrows on the bow and I listed the bow on ebay and sold it for $119. Then I bought a pse stinger x for $82 and fixed and sold it for $250. Then I bought 76 gold tip cutdown 340 arrows for $218.10 and sold 60 of them for $300. Then my son, Tim, was murdered on June 21, 2019 and my world turned upside down. For a long time I didn't work on this project. Back in January I decided that life must go on and that I would finish what I started. I set my goal on a hunting bow that most people could afford instead of a tournament bow. A ready to hunt bow in the $400-500 range. The bow I chose was the Bear Whitetail Legend. Why? Because back in the mid 80's when I started out learning how to shoot a bow at the age of 14, it was with a Bear Whitetail Hunter. I progressed from there to a Jennings. Bear bought Jennings in 1984. I've owned several Jennings bows over the years and also shot Mathews, Elite, Martin, New Breed and I'm currently shooting PSE. Since January I've bought, fixed and sold several bows including a Mathews VXR 31.5. Yes I sold a Mathews to get a Bear. Crazy, right? Well here is what I ended up with. Bear Whitetail Legen $484.98 Bear bow case $62.65 Throphy Ridge sync arrow rest $66.95 Trophy Ridge precise release $86 I already had the arrows and broadheads Gold Tip cutdown 340 arrows Magnus stinger 125 broadheads All totals to $700.58. I just wanted to share this because I hear people all the time saying that I just can't afford a new bow. As you can see, if you apply yourself and use your talents, you to can afford to buy a new setup. It just takes time and effort. Now for the 2nd phase of this project I shot it through the chronograph to see what kind of speed it's putting out as sent from factory. I set it to my draw length of 27" and draw weight of 65 lbs. From factory it was shooting 242 fps. Then I put a set of my strings on and the drop away rest, because I don't like a whisker biscuit, and a peep sight without the rubber tube to see if there is any improvement in speed. After just those few modifications it is shooting 255 fps. A gain of 13 fps. Well guys, it seems that I have got my little project bow all tuned up and ready for hunting season. I have it sighted in out to 60 yards, not that I would try to shoot a deer that far. I had to swap from the 340 spine arrows to a 400 spine to get my broadheads to tune with the target tips. This actually bumped my speed up to 262 fps. We still have a few more weeks before season comes in. I can't wait to try and kill one with this setup. The 1st photo is of a 50 yard group. The 2nd photo is one shot from 40, 50 and 60 yards. The 3rd photo is of a magnus stinger broadhead at 40 yards. The last photo is from September 18 where I shot high score with this bow at a fundraiser tournament in Mississippi. And for the 3rd phase of this project will be to kill a deer with this setup while filming with the tactacam. That will have to wait until season comes in.
