max range determination should START at the practice range..ALL yer shots in a 6" circle every time....thats the lonhest YOU should ever attempt a shot UNDER PERFECT CONDITIONS. Which don't exist very often in the deer woods....
deer jump the string, take a step, turn, the wind blows...or stops, limbs get in the way, you flinch, blink, fart, sneeze, just at release
YOU have to determine if a presented shot is good for you at that moment.
"Usually" I like a stickbow shot inside 10 yards, inside 15 yards for sure. 20 is getting long for me "most" days. I have cleanly killed deer out to 32 yards when conditions were perfect and the "green light" went off......
With a compound(Hoyt@250fps) I like em inside 25 yards, 15-18 is near perfect. 30+ is long IN THE WOODS but I have killed em at 35-40 yards. I once killed a BIG buck at 49 yards after crawling that close to him BEDDED WITH A HOT DOE....he wasn't going to move at all. Rangefinder and LOTS of practice at 50 yards. First shot took him a little high, he stood and second arrow hit within 2" of the first, dead right there.
I really like 9 yards a lot though....
