I practice out to 60, longest shot or kill 40. I like my shots under 30, wounding one is terrible feeling for me.

30 yards. I put a perfect shot on one at 45 yards once and heard him fall, but I shouldn't have taken that shot. Too much can go wrong at that distance, regardless of whether you put the arrow where you want to or not. I like them to be 15-20 yards.

max range determination should START at the practice range..ALL yer shots in a 6" circle every time....thats the lonhest YOU should ever attempt a shot UNDER PERFECT CONDITIONS. Which don't exist very often in the deer woods.... wink

deer jump the string, take a step, turn, the wind blows...or stops, limbs get in the way, you flinch, blink, fart, sneeze, just at release laugh

YOU have to determine if a presented shot is good for you at that moment.

"Usually" I like a stickbow shot inside 10 yards, inside 15 yards for sure. 20 is getting long for me "most" days. I have cleanly killed deer out to 32 yards when conditions were perfect and the "green light" went off......

With a compound(Hoyt@250fps) I like em inside 25 yards, 15-18 is near perfect. 30+ is long IN THE WOODS but I have killed em at 35-40 yards. I once killed a BIG buck at 49 yards after crawling that close to him BEDDED WITH A HOT DOE....he wasn't going to move at all. Rangefinder and LOTS of practice at 50 yards. First shot took him a little high, he stood and second arrow hit within 2" of the first, dead right there.

I really like 9 yards a lot though....

I'm kidding... ususally someone on here has already mentioned a head shot on a question like this.

For me - I wouldn't shoot beyond 30 yards, and I sure wouldn't try a head shot.

I practice out to 100yds on a daily basis.I only do that to help with form and make the closer shots easier. Also form and tuning imperfections are magnified the further out you practice. Plus will make you more confident. No matter how confident I am in a shot, my max yardage is 30yds. I shot one buck when I was younger at 54 yards in a cotton field because everything felt right. I made a perfect shot but by no means should I have ever tried something like that and never will again.

Those critters can do one out of hundreds of things while that arrow is in flight that will result in wounded or missed animals.

20 yards and prefer 17 yds. Longbows dont have the effective range of compounds but getting em close is fun.

My max is 35 yards. I shoot a single pin set at about 24 yards. At 35 yards I can hold it about 5 inches high and the arrow will drop right in. Beyond that I let em walk.

When you are young, invincible, and have the self proclaimed mad archery skills of Robin Hood ...you will take shots that years later you will look back on and say to yourself, "man, that was dumb!" If that moment of truth suddenly happens where that huge buck steps out in an opening, looking bigger than life and you are all hyped up on Mountain Dew, your bladder bulging and legs crossed, while fighting to keep your heart from pounding out of your chest...you are going to sling that arrow without giving the distance a second thought. Experience is a great teacher. 35 yds or closer!

I've shot targets at my range at 50 yards with accuracy. That being said, I can't think of any place in the woods where you would have a 50 yard shot. Probably would be hard to find a good 35 yard shot in the woods. My "comfortable" range is 0-15 yards, but I can easily make a 35 yard shot if the situation allows for it.

Just put your corn pile 18 yards from your tree and you're good. Seriously, it's funny how having them right up on you creates just as many challenges as having them on the edge of your range. I hate a real close shot because you start losing the double lung when they're right under you. 15-20 is my goal.

30 yards is my max. After 35 years, and lots of stupid shots, won't hardly take a shot unless it's quarteing away.

I don't understand the "quartering away only".......

I've shot dozens of deer dead broadside, never lost one that was hit tight to the shoulder. You actually have a better chance of a passthru with a broadside shot, a lot of the time on quartering shots you hit the opposite shoulder...stopping the arrow.
