Might have already been said (I didn't read the comments), but unless you're on a road, a deer cart is more work than it is help IMO. I guess determine the easiest route to the nearest roadbed, drag it there, and go get the cart.
Just comes down to a "cost vs benefit analysis".... does that deer look like it'll be more fun to kill than it will be work to drag out? I bet we all got stories of killing one on a WMA somewhere (like Choccolocco with all those mountains), and it taking 3 hours to get the deer outta there. I've wondered before how easy it would be to do the ol thing where you tie the deer's legs to a big limb and you and a buddy put it on your shoulders (deer between you) and start walking?

Ain't nuthing wrong with a good wheel barrow either.

Ain't nuthing wrong with a good wheel barrow either. Under appreciated and often overlooked. I have a short (24") choker that I keep in my pack. Loop it around the neck and hook it to my safety harness and get gone. Sure helps having both arms free when trying to pull yourself and a critter up a hill.

I like the wheel barrel comment. 👍
In my case I try to drive the golf cart right up to them or at least as close as possible. It is amazing what a lifted knobby tire golf cart can go through to get to a deer.

It really depends on where you hunt? I was in a spot yesterday that was a 45 minute walk in over dozens of fallen trees blocking a dim 4-wheeler trail on public land with steep hills. It likely hasn't been hunted this season. I jumped several deer going in and found a good rub. There's no easy way getting a deer out of there so I'd just better make it count if I pull the trigger. I won't hunt it again unless I have a buddy with me.

When I lived in Oklahoma somebody told me to get a hay hook and put it through the bottom jaw. I was amazed at how well it worked. Gets most of the weight up off the ground. I was hunting a public spot where u couldn’t use 4 wheelers etc... I also used a set of handtrucks in there from time to time.

If I can’t get to it with a 4 wheeler I don’t shoot it. I drag them out with the 4 wheeler.

Reminds me of a scenario from earlier this year. My old club is now a WMA and no motorized vehicles are allowed beyond the gates. I know where to find deer and when but getting to them and especially getting them out is now a much more daunting task. My first ML hunt this year I went into a place where I’ve killed it at least seen good bucks every first sit n that timeframe. This year was no exception but I buggered up my chance on two that came in behind me. Although I didn’t make a kill I was looking at how I’d get them out if I had. I’m only about 200 yards from a road but it’s 150+ feet of elevation up to that road. There’s a less steep ridge that ends in there but that’s a good 400+ yard drag uphill and around to the same spot. Or I can drag them about 200 yards on mostly flat ground to the road through the property but then it’s nearly a mile to the access gate for the road. Two years ago I’d have just driven my wheeler up in there and loaded one up.

Novice deer hunter searching for my first... As I was pondering the meaning of life and looking down into that nice hardwood bottom, I had an epiphany. I realized that anything I kill will have to be dragged up a steep hill and then another 100 yards or so to my vehicle over rough terrain. I didn't even want to think about shooting anything on the next ridge, that would be an even longer trip. I've seen carts and some guys just quarter it on the spot and pack it out in game bag. I am curious what yall have found to be the best way to get your meat back to the vehicle? I use a Jet Sled for steep places, areas littered with deadfall, and wet and muddy areas. Use my Sherpa Cart (Summit Climbing Tree Stand) when it's relatively flat and firm ground. I use the regular sized one. The extra-large one is too big. https://www.amazon.com/Shappell-Jet...s=jet+sled&qid=1640130208&sr=8-2Sherpa Cart (Wheel kit on my tree stand) https://www.sherpahunting.com/summit_viper_classic_model.htmlThis cart is very popular. https://www.amazon.com/Hawk-Crawler...+deer+cart&qid=1640130362&sr=8-3Bill

They sure do slide easy on snow. You can ride them like a Bob sled down hill.

Use a harness (like a safety harness) thats the easiest way to drag one so your hands are free and you can pull with your whole body in a normal walking position That's how I do 99% of mine. My HSS has that drag tether, so I hook it up and off we go....hernias be damned!!
