I struck out in Kentucky this year. Hopefully I’ll be able to connect with a buck here in Alabama.

Struck out on my Portland landing SOA hunt earlier in the season and was then unfortunately called back to the ship. Hopefully back home to hunt for the last week of the season.

Well fellas my #1 buck has lost half his rack, looks like he shed that side already, I believe this deer to be 7-8 years old, I've know about him for the last 4 years, had one encounter with him early bow season just never got close enough...wish I could have killed him 2 years ago as he had about a 5 inch drop tine...any of y'all ever had a deer shed this early? I'm hoping some new shooters move in for the rut if not I've only got 1 other deer that I'd probably shoot.

...any of y'all ever had a deer shed this early? I have not. A couple of observations & thoughts from those photos though: 1.) Shedding occurs (typically) when testosterone levels drop quickly after the rut. 2.) His tarsals show no sign of staining. This leaves me with a couple of questions/possibilities: 1.) Are the deer in your area already finished rutting? That wouldn't be the norm for 90% of the state, the exception being right around Bankhead. 2.) Is this particular buck experiencing low testosterone levels due to illness, injury, or as a result of age? 3.) Was the back-leaning brow tine on the now missing side evidence of a velvet injury that perhaps weakened that antler at the base? It's a real head scratcher to me.

Hippie I'm not really sure, I initially thought he was hit by a car but he appears to perfectly healthy, he comes to that feeder almost every night and morning, His tarsals have a little stain but not like they should look for this time of year. I will still hunt that area in hopes to see him and figure out exactly what's up with him..I did have a daylight picture of him a few days ago that appeared to be blood all over his ear but I do know he's a fighter I watched him whoop 2 other decent 8's in early bow season. The rut is just cranking up in St.Clair county, today is the first day I've seen bucks actually chasing. He has always had some type of abnormal rack in my opinion, this year was the backwards leaning brow which could have been a velvet injury that caused it to be weaker, 2 years ago he had the same frame but was a mainframe 7 with about a 5in drop, he disappeared last year and I never had a pic I honestly thought he died after season the year he had the droptine. The side that is missing is the side that had the droptine also.I stopped hunting him the droptine year because he broke the drop off on new years eve, the buck I killed on the 26th was his only main competition that I know about. I'm puzzled myself, he will get the pass from me and see how next year turns out.
