At my place they usually start mid March. Generally when things start to green up.
I guess. It would matter on if they need it or not as to when they start

I'm trying to make sure all of mine are "freshened up" by the end of February. Let that stuff get good in the soil before they start hammering it

Thanks for the input guys. Had a spot I wanted to start, and thought about gettin it done by March or so. Wanted to see if that sounded fairly accurate.

Most of the time the red blocks from tractor supply for me. Might be something better I don’t know. But I can tell you that deer will use them a lot.

I use (2) 50lb bag of trace minerals and (1) 50lb bag of DiCalcium Phosphate.

That 150lbs mixed together is enough to do 2 mineral sites.

I'm gonna be making my own this year.. 2 parts trace mineral salt, 1 part DiCalcium Phosphate, 1 part dried molasses, and 1 part stock salt. Can get 50lbs bags of all of them for about $60-$70 total. Makes up around 250lbs of stuff to put out. Molasses just to help the scent get out to draw them in a little more, plus helps take away the bitterness of the DiCalcium Phosphate.

They are interested in the one I made and have my camera on all year but it really slows down in Winter and goes crazy in Spring and Summer.

I’m going to try 30-06 mineral with a trophy rock this year. Never had much luck with mineral sites but maybe this is my year.

Tucker millings deer draw.
Has corn, soybeans, rice bran and loaded with minerals
While they eat up the food in it, minerals leach into ground

Do you get the minerals off the ground if you have a lot of hogs? Like some form of gravity feeder?

Everywhere I've dropped a tractor supply red salt block or three they hammer. They even like the yellow sulfur kind. I see tracks consistently going to the mineral sites all year, and actually have a buck bedding 10 yards from one. Need to go freshen them up before the spring rains. Mineral sites do best on upper clay soils that don't leech away super quick like sandy bottomland soils.

I have had good luck with the red salt mineral blocks from tractor supply for years, even when i used them in Louisiana......I need to try the yellow ones this year....good advice on the soils also......the heavy clay soils hold moisture better and the minerals in general, without them leaching out so quickly in the sandy soils.....

Thought about doin a mix for this spot. Heavy trail right out of bedding area, figured I'll find a good spot just off the trail comin out. Have doe beds 350 yds away and buck beds 100yds or so. It's a good staging area so I figure anywhere in there should be pretty good.

I've used the red blocks from feed store or tractor supply. I've had the best luck putting them on a short stump and pouring molasses over them .seems like the minerals and molasses seep into stump and they eat and lick stump.
