On a new site, start out with white salt and trace, when they get used to it, add di-cal. They don’t like the taste of it right off the bat.

I hate to say it, but a trophy rock is mostly salt. Read the label on it. It provides very little of the stuff deer need for antler growth.

I used the mineral mix in the bag at TS. But I got some 30-06 vitimin and mineral mix I am going to put out. Lucky Buck also seems to work. Going to get the dicalcium stuff too.

People will always say that the deer love the trophy rocks they put out or the red salt blocks.. and yeah of course they tear it up. It's 90-96% salt. The deer do need salt, but like lockjaw said, it doesn't give them much of anything they need to grow antlers. The two biggest minerals they need are calcium and phosphorus. The deer may love those trophy rocks, but it's just a glorified salt rock with very little mineral in it.

Guy. most of the minerals mentioned above is mostly salt blocks. Certainly that attracts deer but you are not doing anything for antler growth or to help does with milk or give the deer any nutritional at all. SALT IS JUST SALT.
Try 30-06 minerals or Record Rack minerals. They have salt, but very little. The rest of it is all the ingredients deer need. 30-06 is probably the best, but also the most expensive. Again, look at the salt content when buy minerals and if it is mostly salt and that is what the label talks about - don't buy it unless you are only looking for an attractant.

Trace mineral salt bag. Di-cal mix it 3 to 1. dig hole mix in with dirt. done. we will refresh when the hole is dug out real good. Havent really seen our deer on it until it gets hotter. But then again we dont have cameras out until June.

I’ve had the best luck putting a trophy rock on a stump or piling up dead tree limbs that are big leave it til June and then add the di-cal to the soil beneath it. Even on my established licks I keep the trophy rock and just add the minerals. It’s a good way to get pictures of what you have roaming around.

I get them started coming to a spot with that Deer Co Caine stuff. They absolutely love it. It is not too expensive either. I also find it funny that they used to call it Deer Cocaine but had to change the name for whatever legal reason.
I think this year I’m going to try something with more of the minerals they need and not just like and see if there is a difference. I’ll start reading labels and ingredients more closely.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Yes, throwing out a block is a lot easier, but it is also expensive and mostly salt. You can use a bag of general purpose livestock minerals that has dicalcium phosphate in it and trace mineral salt from tractor supply at $19.99 and $7.99 respectively both in 50 lb. bags and mix your own. I will also throw in a tub of grape kool aid or buy a bag of dry molasses from Am@#$% and mix that in with it. The formula should be 2 parts minerals to 1 part salt and 1 part molasses. I don't usually put these out until the end of Feb. or early March if I am just starting a site, but I will also update it about four times a year. I know some may only update it three times each year, everyone has their own way of doing things.

It definitely seems pretty reasonable to mix a batch up that's for sure. Beats paying the same price, or more for a name brand bag of filler.

Based on my cameras, they've really gone nuts for mine the past few days for some reason.

2 parts Trace Mineral, 1 part Fine Stock Salt, 1 part Dical, and mix some powdered kool-aid. Just started one Saturday and young bucks, spikes, button heads, and does have been hitting it already. Wasn’t planning on them hitting it until it got into the soil pretty good but they’ve been wearing it out within a day of putting it out.

Got about a dozen bags of pool salt from my neighbor that I’ll use to freshen ours at the lease up this weekend.

Yes. I mix mine in a big cooler but a bucket would work just as well
