IF Putin wanted a war with US or NATO, all he would have to do is advance on a NATO country.
The problem with advancing on a NATO country is being able to sell to his people that he isn't being the aggressor. Things like the long, lined up convoys are nothing more than a tee'd up ball begging to be swung on. Putin is desperately trying to bait someone to take a cut so that he can rally troops in "defense of the motherland." It's literally the playbook of Nazi Germany WW2.

Obviously some here will disagree with me but I truly don't think Putin is as smart as he is made out to be and grossly underestimated the Ukrainian willpower . I think he is a bully and came to power as a bully and remained in power as a bully. I just don't think strategy and critical thinking are his stronger points.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Let's hope that doesn't happen. War between two nuclear armed countries would not be a good thing for anybody. But I believe if war should happen, you will see Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China as the new axis of evil.

So if Russia can pull in other non-NATO forces to the conflict, then perhaps Ukraine should do the same. Maybe that would open an opportunity for NATO countries to fund that new force without directly engaging. Of course we are tip-toeing along against the decision from Pootin of 'time for world war'.
Perhaps Pootin is planning to trick a NATO country or even NATO to attack as many have mentioned. When that happens, he'd rather lose old inventory and foreign troops (Syrian). Kind of a sacrificial lamb towards the end goal. There's no way IMO he'd done all of this chest beating and gathering of forces only to have the pathetic display we've seen so far. It's like he knows the WEST will see him as weak or crazy and his force out of sorts. Setting the table just like he wants.

True, and he would make up some ruse to justify it.

the russian military is nowhere near as good as it says it is. a civil engineer, y'all, apparently planned this invasion, NOT a general. besides, ukraine has saint javelin on her side, a fine alabama connection ...

The news says it is getting very cold over there and the Russians are low on fuel to keep their vehicles warm.

Negative ghost rider. I fully believe Russia is pulling a rope-a-dope Ali shuffle and the first sign of true resistance or help from the US or NATO, hell will be unleashed in a way that none of us are truly ready for.
I have had this thought in the back of my mind since the first reports of Russian military ineptitude. It's no longer just a thought bouncing around back there. Putin is not an idiot as our own POTUS is. He is ruthless and he is smart believe it or not. He's been lining up the chess pieces for a good while now and is only burning a few pawns to finish getting the board set up. He has the rest of the world somewhat in check so to speak as it is now. He wouldn't be playing the game this way if he wasn't looking for a check mate, or at least to set Russia's status far better than it currently is. There's more to it than what we are seeing and there is more to it than what is being reported too. Watch the Rooks and Queen on the edge of the board.

FreeStateHunter I hope you don’t think the number of lives lost matters to Putin. He’s staging the scene for whatever is next, as they do in Hollywood. Everyone at the table hasn’t got their ante in to play yet. Don’t misunderstand what I said. He couldn’t care less about the actual life that is lost but he does care about the overall number of lives lost strictly because he knows it will be used as propaganda and it’s a loss of resources at his disposal. It seems a lot of y’all are thinking he’s setting up his game pieces and what not, and I’m not saying it’s wrong I just have a different opinion. I just pull from my own military experience. Even Putin isn’t stupid enough to put his forces into bad positions to play some game daring other countries to come fight him. People forget about the logistics of war. You can’t just declare war and be on target in 30 minutes and catch everyone off guard, especially moving ground forces through swampy terrain. That takes weeks and months. That’s exactly why we knew this was going to happen in the first place.
