Don't get me wrong here, I’m not saying that these maps are incorrect..... but I think the way they use the “average” conception date kinda skews and paints a different picture in some areas versus what is truly happening. The big blue dot in the center of the state being a prime example…..I think due to how the average is being used, those buffer rings around it are actually showing a dilution of the dark blue as you move away from the core of that isolated doe population .....Meaning that there are fewer and fewer does with that late breeding date as you move away from the core and more does with earlier estrous dates......The "average" changes ……I also think the layout of the main interstates are why you see it dilute northwards the way you do.

I don't know what all that means. I do live and do most of my hunting that blue dot you're talking about. We see bucks still in bachelor groups in November, just start stinking about a week before Christmas and are still rutting when the season goes out in mid January. I've seen bucks still pawing in the first few weeks of March and still holding horns into April. Another WMA closer to I 75, honestly about 15 miles across the woods as the crow flies, they are chasing in late October, and early November, and are totally done by the first of December. Odd thing is, there is sparsly populated land, a mine and one hiway between the 2 WMAs. Surely deer travel between the 2 WMAs, though there isn't a lot of deer in the wooded Estates between the 2. I don't really hunt the west end of the WMA I live in, but them boys over there seem to kill more of their bucks earlier in the season, so it would be safe to assume that's sort of a transition zone? Lots of folks around here have made the same observations over the years and when the map came out, it just confirmed what we already knew. Crazy as it looks, I'd say the map is spot on.

What I’m saying is that if you took 100 does with 50 of them having an estrous date in say October and 50 of them having an estrous date in January and you take the “average conception date” from that…..you will come out with an average showing late November when in fact none of the 100 does actually have an estrous date during that time. The closer you get to the core area where those January does are isolated though the more January does you will pick up…..Lets say now we have 75 January does and 25 October does…..Our “average” is now more like mid December even though again we dont have any of the 100 does with December estrous dates….…..That’s how those buffer rings form around spots like the dark blue area in the center……If you sample in the dark blue area you’re likely to get 100 out of 100 with Jan estrous dates…..as you move farther away from the core of that isolated population you get less and less of them in a sample….
What likely makes things even more confusing is that an October estrous doe herd would actually have a second rut cycle occur in November which might look more intense than the first go round…..So areas where these herds intermingle may see some does in estrous for several months.

I have been in Conecuh county since 1988. As a general rule the 3rd. week of Jan. is always good. Think about this. We have killed bucks that were rutted up and stinking in Nov. and we killed them in Feb. They can breed as long as they have antlers, I guess. Scrapes start showing as soon as the velvet comes off in late Oct. and by Christmas you will find them often. I had my first chase on camera this year on Jan. 3rd. I have been trying to figure these critters out for a long time and I am still confused.

That makes sense

I see the point you're getting at, the interstates are what jumps out. However, the other WMA just west of here I was talking about straddles the interstate and doesn't seem different from one side to the other? Now I'm not old enough to know how the rut was before the interstates where here, but it's just been the last 5-10 years that they had tall fences and would really do much to hold deer back and I know the rut has been this way since i was a kid. That is an interesting observation though and something to think about.
