I live in the Bankhead and I'm gonna have to agree with CNC on the burning issue and rodents. I think CNC is the 1 that posted on the issues of rats/mice. Anyways when you travel a 5 mile dirtroad you start to take notice. As most of you know the Bankhead is mostly a predominantly hardwood forest but since the burnings have taken place on this area I see plenty of rabbits and rodents crossing all the time, very rare in the past. I see lots of coyotes and it's been a long time since I've seen a skinny one. I used to rarely see a rabbit but never seen rats/mice. I will have to admit that I'm against the burning because of the timing they choose to do it. I will say that this year the burns were a little bit better common sense wise. They know what time they need to burn for it to be beneficial, times I've seen them burn way into May but they have a job and I understand that but as I mentioned common sense goes a long way in prescribed burns. I can't tell you how many rabbits and rats I see now and the raptors are out of control. You will not drive down my road without seeing hawks and owls, yes owls in the daytime. I don't know how 1 single poult makes it but I know how nature works. No matter what happens in this forest whether it be some supposedly college educated kid that's all the sudden a know it all about everything person or biologist as they label, they do no studies on foot only from a vehicle. The road used to have several gates on it and it's down to 2. I have tried and tried to get things better for the wildlife in general in the Bankhead but I get the same answer each time and its lack of funding. If the hikers or leftists bunch needs anything done it gets done. The wildlife go without and I've witnessed this for years and I can prove it. The whole road I travel has 11 greenplot openings and not a 1 has been planted in years. I have no idea where the money is going but I contacted the DCNR and NWTF and the Forest service and I was promised that they would fix the gates and plant the fields, lies is all I get. The lady I talked to at the DCNR knows how to do 1 thing and that's to feed you full of ideas that will never happen. She has some major issues because she knows nothing about wildlife until she sends me some link from Google that pertains to 0. I know alot of you won't read this but this is something that needs to be addressed asap. It's our money that is suppost to go to wildlife but I've not seen it happen in years. Doing what is right is not that hard but until these snail, bat, salamander and eagle loving folks in Montgomery are gone then turkeys number one are in trouble. I hope the lady that I talked to at the DCNR sees this and chimes in because I know she is on here. The patches that haven't been planted has brand new bat boxes in them, I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure bats bring in 0 revenue compared to deer/turkey. Long story short our DCNR needs a good wakeup call. To my original point on burning I will be glad to agree with it if it's done at the right time but it hardly ever is, therefore I'm gonna have to be against it.
I even offered to use my own equipment to plant the openings and pay for everything and never heard back from them. Her excuse at the time was the seed vendor hadn't come through on their end but I was lied to because I know who the vendor was.
Sorry for the long post but our states DCNR is a cluster of Dems. Yea I hear you bro! They had one there a short while back managing the Black River area. I dont think he ever got out of his truck! Hogs everywhere, youd think the lazy guy would go out and at least shoot one or two so the food plots woudnt get ruined. And yeah, talk about the food plots! Dont get me going. I dont think the lazy guy ever planted a darn thing there. I wonder if he even knew how to run a tractor to be honest. Man where do they get these clowns? But I guess he was some "Fancy" Biologist from MSU or Auburn or Gainesville. Wherever these idiots come from to get those silly biologist degrees sitting at a desk.Youd think it would require getting out from behind the desk and studying critters. I dont think he was even a hunter, and if he was I sure dont think hed be good at it. Seemed clueless about critters. I guess he could kill a doe or a spike but a mature buck? LOL. Never in his life. He was a skinny little fella so Im pretty sure his hunting skills were sub Par. Just saying! I even asked him once about trying to kill those hogs during a special season they had in the spring there. Maybe a little advise but he sure did not give me much. Only thing he knew was where he saw them crossing roads. And I guess at one spot he must of napped at a lot. And like you mentioned definitely a darn dem. Had an Obama/Biden AND a Hillary sticker on his truck parked there. I never told many folks but every time I saw it, I took a leak on them stickers. Somedays there was a line to wait in..other folks doing the same. I even heard he was some kind of cross dresser and some one even posted a picture of him on here in a dress. And he had a Goatee! Where do they find these folks?

No, Not that guy. Im talking about another "Fancy" Fella. Younger than that guy . This fella was a biologist "supposedly". If you ever drove down the old back roads youd see him there sometimes sleeping. Kinda like Joe Biden. Little fella loved his naps I reckon. And Ice Cream too. Youd see him at Jacks in Moulton or Double Springs getting them Ice cream shakes made of real Ice Cream. Guy likes Ice Cream more than Nancy Pelosi and Biden put together.

Dont see him any more. I heard he was promoted and now works directly "under" Chuckie. Must be stationed there in the Gump now. Guess he and Chuckie were always pretty close. Pretty sure they were of the same line of thinking. CWD? Dominant Gobbler Theory? Pretty sure this fella helped form the darn plans! And burning? That little son of a gun was like a pyro maniac! Even had a dang flame thrower he drove around with in his UTV setting those fires. Burning poults, fawns..heck I guess everything SMDH. March, April, May, June? he dont care. "Have Flame Thrower..Will travel" I guess was his motto! Dont know where they get those guys but good luck to him in the Gump. Im sure he will go far there. Pretty sure they were grooming this guy for Chuckies Job.

The person you are referring to does his job to the best of his ability and whatever happens in his free time I could care less. LOL. I was being sarcastic. The fella I am talking about is a pretty good biologist, land manager and hunter. And had the WMA there looking great. The food plots were lush and the hunting good and he runs a tractor like no tomorrow . And he was a one man killing machine on the hogs there. And when I asked him he directed me to one and and killed one there my second am. I was being sarcastic. And Im pretty sure he is his own man when coming to CWD and The DGT. It was a joke. And he wore a dress when he lost a bet but you can bet Ill bust his arse every chance I can over it. Ive known MBrock for years and have busted his tail every time I see him since Ive known him. ( Pretty sure he had just started shaving. But maybe not for a year or two after) . And these days I see him a lot. And he is about as much of a lib as I am. You were over generalizing people and biologists in general. I was pointing that out in a subtle manner. Skinny, We really need both a "Sarcasm" emoji and a "Guy with a spoon stirring a big pot " emoji on here! But I wasnt kidding about the burning, the flame thrower and the pyro maniaism. Remember dont take my posts seriously. I am just here4fun!

Doesnt a growing season burn promote more forbs and legumes and less grass?? It can yes. That’s what I was thinking…….……Maybe some of the management areas could try to incorporate more growing season burns in the future in late May and June.

In the 7 or so years I’ve been hunting Cahaba there hasn’t been a burn that I am aware of. I assume they can’t burn because the timber companies won’t let them.

You won’t get much of a burn right now at night simply due to the humidity climbing at night. Finer fuels like straw and dead grass might would carry at night, but I’ve had a hard time getting fire to carry at 2 pm lately from the humidity and green foliage. Depends on the site and fuels. Gobbler must just be skeert.......

I wonder how a night burn would behave right now under the current conditions?? Be a little better on the hen and poults, atleast death would be less cruel. CNC let's discuss the raptor population.

Like Matt said, with the high humidity levels at night you’d probably be lucky if anything burned at all, much less burned at a rapid rate…..The reason it came to mind was because of how things are getting kinda dry right now……I doubt you're gonna burn up hens and hatched poults with slow growing season burns. We're supposed to have some natural fire occur during this time of year. Raptor populations……….What’s on your mind?
