I wonder if me and my classmates hemmed up with a deranged shooter would have taken any sort of action.
Seems to me a classroom full of youngsters back then might have tried to do something.

The shooter probably wouldn't have had weapon like an AR, but I don't know.

That SOB in Uvalde was reportedly in that room for about an hour.
I can't get a grip on that.

Dude….they were 7-8 yr olds. Are you suggesting a bunch of 2nd graders should have ganged up on an adult with a rifle?

No adult can say exactly how they'd act when they were a kid under those cirmcustances.

Okay, sorry I brought it up.

At that age we were tougher than the same age group today.

You weren't that tough.

This maniac was shooting outside the school for 12 minutes (twelve).

I can see maybe 15yr old boys and up doing something back then but not Grammer kids...

I think Dragfan66 is just spit balling because we are all sitting here talking about what we would have done or how things should have been different.

In fantasy land... everyone wants to imagine they or an officer makes their way to the classroom and when they get there the door is unlocked. Another key piece of the details. They fling it open rush in and shoot the bad guy dead with their pistol, save the day and are an American Hero.

In my mind it's locked for sure. But at any moment it might come open and Taliban flips a grenade out into the hall with me. These doorways are all different so I don't know what this particular doorway looks like. Either way I don't find it easy to kick in a commercial door like John Wayne and shoot a bad guy.... In particular when the bad guy is standing on the other side shooting back through the doorway at you. If you rush up there like a wild man and get shot in the hallway dead or are bleeding out... you just became another piece problem and you are no longer part of the solution. You just caused resources on scene to be focused on saving you instead of the kids in the classroom. Obviously if you can gain entry you go in. But rushing through a choke point under a hail of rifle fire.....I'm picturing Medal of Honor level chit going down... but at the same time I'm picturing a fat middle age traffic cop with his or HER little pistol and pepper spray. Which one is realistic?

This is a total dumpster fire. You just can't over simplify this situation in your mind.

I think they obviously had some procedures which were discussed after Columbine so hopefully this time around we can really get down to trying to solve this issue and if nothing else really think about the response, the timing, and what training and tools are needed. The first step in my mind is focusing on what solutions keep these threats outside the building. That's where it starts.

It would be bad or worse in the 60's because back then these things did not happen and there was not even a slight bit of preparation for these kinds of things. The only preparation we did for emergencies was to practice tornado and nuclear bomb drills.

Imagine how loud that rifle was going off inside a small room. Totally unprepared young children. Seeing their friends guts and brains blown out. I doubt they could even process what was happening and I’m sure were in physical shock. I can barely let my mind wonder there as I have an 8 yr old daughter. That person could not have been human during the time he was doing that. He may have has a human form body but his mind and heart were of Satan.

I have five grandkids spread all over Alabama, four of them still in school.
These situations play heavy on my mind.

As someone who was robbed at a gas station once, as an adult, I can tell you NO kid and VERY FEW adults can truly tell you, with any sense of certainty, what they would actually do. LOTS of people talk about how they’d draw their firearm, etc…. Until you’re in the situation, you have absolutely no idea what you’d do.

I'm willing to bet the "tough" level at that age is pretty much universal.

I read an article where one of the surviving girls covered herself with her classmates blood and played dead. Not sure how true this is, WSFA had an article about it.
