I never noticed but had a friendly discussion so thought i would ask here. I am right handed but tiller steer with my left hand. Stepson is right handed and tiller steers with his right hand. Never paid attention to how others do it but how do you steer in relation to your dominant hand? The only two things i do left handed is shoot long guns and pool but i don't like left handed guns.

Always with left hand. Only place I see people use their right is on tv. Don’t know anyone here that uses right hand to drive.

It makes sense because you have to crank it with your right arm and need to be on the starboard side to do that. At least, that's the case with those of us who grew up with a pull start.

Right and steer left. Like above you have to have your right to crank it. And left has to be on the gas in some cases to get it running or keep it from idling up too high.

All about prop rotation. Right side of the boat normally rides a smidge higher because of the prop rotation so naturally you sit on that side to level it out and steer with the left hand. Anything else would mean my mentor was wrong and he’s dead and gone and can’t defend himself so he’ll just have to be right. 😃

Most tillers are mounted on the left side of outboard as well, driving with your right hand makes it hard to turn all the way due to the tiller hitting you depending on the boat design. A true Jon boat isn’t as much of an issue but a lot of the welded boats with a true rear deck make it almost impossible to sit on port side and turn all the way to the right
