Have a contract on a piece of property, looking at the utility options. There is water available at the main road, but would be a roughly 1500 foot run to get the water main from the road to where I want the utilities. Looking at some pricing from the internet, it looks like the cost of having that done is going to be crazy high. Think I'm going to be better of with a well.

I was told a new well was roughly $5-6k. The cost of having someone come do the main looks insane, like $75k plus. Am I seeing this correctly? Anyone have first hand experience?

I haven't had a quote yet, but the interwebs is saying anywhere from $50 to $150 per foot. Which seems insane to me.

Something not mentioned, what is this property and what's the purpose of this property.
Is this a primary residence?
Commercial?
Hunting camp?
etc

What have the neighbors in that local area done?

All that said, for the described scenario I would probably go with a well, nice filtration system and maybe even a storage tank.

Rent a ditch witch, call before you dig.

buy the pipe yourself, dig the trench yourself.

Call the man to do the final hook-ups to make sure its up to spec.

Should be in your ballpark for the amount you are willing to spend.

Yeah, definitely an option. I thought there were some limits on call before you dig where they will check. Will they do down the sides of an easement?

I put in a 4" line that was 2300' long years ago that was around $2k. But that was a line that the water authority would eventually take over and put meters on it. The section that I ran from my meter to my house used 2" pipe and was much cheaper.

I can't imagine it being $75k. If you are gonna set your meter at the main road and run the pipe down a private drive, then there shouldn't be any standards on how deep it has to be. I would get someone with a tractor and some type of single plow to dig a trench and put in a 2" line myself. Or you might be able to hire someone with a trencher to get it deeper. I believe some places rent these.

I would dig the line with a shovel before paying $75k for it. Good luck

1,500 feet isn’t that far. Do it yourself. A couple of days work with the right equipment. $75k is silly and not a reasonable price.

I would just do a well before spending $75k!! This is in Bama. I think when I start getting quotes, it will come in more reasonable. Doing it myself is definitely an option, but hiring people that do that for a living is always my first preference. Let them have the liability of hitting a neighbors line or something else.

Make sure to bed your pipe properly, especially if traffic will cross it

And…make sure you buy 20’ sticks so you get those slip couplings on each one.

Brother and I put in a little over a hundred pieces in two days at the new camp. Trencher rental was around $150, make sure you get flanged pipe. In that long of a run, go with 11/2”. I hate dealing with well pumps when it freezes for several days and if the power out, not water. Our old shack camp had a well for watering cows with rusty pipe and for a couple hundred bucks we replaced it with a few 300’ rolls of black plastic pipe. Borrowed a 24” single shank subsoiler, tied the pipe to the chisel and drug it. That’s the cheap way.
