I'm browsing the different types. Looking in the $400-$500 price range.

I like the space saving shape of the cabinet types. But also know the glass will smoke up and be worthless after a few uses.

Anyone have thoughts on the traditional smoker shape vs the vertical cabinet type?

Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

I've never tried a pellet smoker. Once I got the Vision Kamado, I never felt the need to try anything else.

I have a pit boss and really like the convenience of it. It is a better grill than it is a smoker, I much prefer to smoke on my Weber smoky mountain. I can cook some killer wings on the pit boss, use the smoke setting for about 30 minutes then crank the heat till the skin is crisp. It’s fairly low maintenance and not very expensive to run, I’ve tried all different types of pellets but can’t tell a difference.

I’ve smoked on everything (side box, green eggs, WSM, Bradley) and my pit boss is the easiest and most consistent out of all of them. You literally just set it and forget it.

As far as the vertical goes I was torn on that too but went with the traditional shape due to the ease of basting while cooking. Especially with ribs you’ll like that better

I have had a Traeger for over 10 years. Like stated above consistency is amazing...set it and forget it; no getting up to stoke the fire, no checking the temp, etc... The traditional style will also allow you to grill. Older Traegers do not have the adjustable heat deflector (not sure on new ones), but you can still grill chicken and pork whereas the vertical IMO would only allow you to smoke. For that reason alone I would go traditional style.

I’ve had a lot of different smokers and still have a few but, I use a pellet smoker/grill 99% of the time because of the ease of use. As others have stated, set it and forget it. I used to knock the pellet types but as I got older, lazier and found less time for cooking, the pellet type is my go to.

I have a vertical pit boss smoker and the pit boss pellet grill/smoker. I use the vertical to smoke everything and it works great, easy and tons of room. I use the grill/smoker to grill everything, haven’t tried using it for smoking. I love them both but I think the vertical would be better to smoke with.

I've used a plain ole Masterbuilt 30" vertical for the last 12 years or thereabouts and love it, but it recently bit the dust. I'll probably buy another just like it. Set the temp, set the time, and forget it until my alarm goes off.

I have a pellet grill/smoker. I like it. Mine can go up to 550 degrees so it does a good job on steaks too.

Pit boss is the way to go for the money. They make them blue tooth and Wi-Fi so you can adjust the temp without going outside. Never miss any football action. 4 meat probes and it holds enough pellets for an 18 hour butt smoke. Mine has the seat feature which is nice if you are cooking steaks. I’ve had egg style smokers before but this is very easy and convenient if you ask me.
