I totally disagree with you, but everyone has an opinion. Many Many studies by people and organizations much smarter than me agree deer do not always get all they need from natural browse. Protein feed and minerals do help improve a deer's health and does help with milk and rack production. Other things like fertilizer and certainly soil samples are important as you pointed out. Green fields with the correct kind of browse is also very helpful in giving the wildlife what they need to grow and be healthy.
What your saying can be true if your carrying capacity is out of whack. But there are plenty of natural browses if taken care of and managed are more beneficial than a protein pellet. Also natural sources of protein are better for digestion for the deer. Nothing better than a good warm season plot. The scale at which you have to feed to out do normal healthy browse is very large, and you need acreage to have an affect feeding.

While you are correct most of us won’t or can’t spend the money required to actually increase those data points. I feed but it’s only to keep the doe population close.
