Any of you fellas ever tried wading for flounder? I just bought a gig and a light so I am going to try it out. Any tips for success?

Did it many times before I got a Carolina Skiff to do it out of. You just can't cover as much ground as you have to move Sloooower in order to not spook them.

Is that something you can do year round? Never done it, going to the beach in September. Sounds fun.

Most of them move out in the Gulf a mile or 3 to Spawn in November/December. Then SOME will move back into the Bay after that. Majority won't return to the Bays until Spring.Season has been closed the past couple years in Alabama during November in Order to Maximize the Spawn.

Growing up in Pensacola, it always seemed best the last two weeks of August through September. In the bays and lagoons. Liked going late at night, and learned going barefoot didn't spook them as much as wearing sneakers.

Buy yeah, a nice flat bottomed boat makes it easier.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I'm going to Ft. Morgan September 17th I think. No idea what to look for, but maybe I'll give it a shot. I'm guessing the bay side is going to be where I need to look.

Sorry for the thread hijack smile

If you are wading, be sure your battery is charged and you have a back up light. I had a buddy wading one night and his lights went out. He couldn’t see where he was stepping and his foot landed on top a huge sting ray. The barn went through his calf and out the other side. We used to kill a bunch in October wading in the gulf. It has to be a light north wind.

Thank you guys for all of the feedback. I am going to be in Fort Morgan next weekend so I am going to make my debut. I am not expecting it to be the best time of year for success but it will at least give me something to do. I travel to the panhandle for work fairly often so maybe I will learn how to put a few flounder on a stringer!

Buddy of mine went earlier this week and did fairly well... biggest was 21.5" smallest was 14.5" and he said he passed on a few hoping to get some bigger ones to stuff. He went down to Dauphin Island and I think he was in a boat though

Are there any features in the water that you look for to target them? Or just get in shallow water and go?

Still, clear water is number one. If it’s a north wind, gig the south side and vice versus. Any beach that has a quick drop off near by is a good one, but almost any beach will hold them this time of year. They’re almost always in there thick or not at all, and the best time to gig em is midnight to 5am.

I do the wading thing quite a bit. I suggest using a LONG stringer. The sharks have been terrible the last few years and you are dragging an enticing aroma.. You would be surprised at the size of some of sharks that come in knee deep water at night. Once one starts following you they are relentless. Might as well pack it in.

Are those lights on the pvc poles necessary or can you get away with a strong flashlight

It needs to be a submersible pvc light or one of the butane powered Coleman gigging lights from like academy.

I use a good bright waterproof flashlight electrical taped to a piece of broom handle so I can hold it under the water to reduce glare. Works like a charm.

Watch out for the damn stingrays. A buddy stepped on one and it tore his ass up. Very painful. I stepped on one but it didn't get a barb in me luckily.

Other than a gig, stringer, submersible light, and a backup flashlight, are there any essentials to make sure that you have?

Bug spray and dip net. You will likely see a crap ton of blue crabs.
