I do all my vehicle service and repairs at my dad's garage. I've never taken a vehicle to a mechanic before.
It used to him be doing most of the work, and me helping out when I wasn't in the way too much. He doesn't have the strength to turn wrenches anymore, but his wisdom while I'm doing the work is still valuable.
I change my own oil for more than just saving money, it's a great father-son bonding moment. I've even been able to teach him a few things in recent years, and I could tell he was proud of me. I worry he won't be around much longer, and I think my time in the garage with him will be what I cherish most.
I'm so thankful for the skill he taught me, and it was definitely a big part of me growing into a man. Nice to have the bonding. I restored my '66 stang years ago and my youngest son was always wanting to be involved. Now he has a '78 trans am and it is a beautiful car. Show room beautiful. I still go over to Atlanta to help do repairs, like a new altenator or power steering pump recently. He calls and asks questions about how to do certain things. I understand the part abouot getting old and having the wisdom about older vintage vehicles. He loves to draw on that too. Always a pleasure to be a part of. He likes to talk about him helping me on the stang when he was about 6-18. Something about turning 18 and girls, makes other things fade into the background A vintage vehicle is a great way to bond with kids. We restored a '56 chevy pickup when he was around 12. He came home one day and asked me if I would help him restore that. It took about 3 years but it turned out beautiful.
