Would you sell the first rifle you ever bought? Seeing the prices for a mid 80's ADL has me thinking. I have two girls that hunt, but have never shot this .270 due to recoil. Sportsman 78, so it was an ADL without a high grade stock and have used a composite for most of the 35 years.
Potato farm labor in St. Elmo, AL paid for it, I just rarely take it out of the safe now and usually hunt with a .308, 7-08 or 7mag. It shoots better than I do.

Just wanted some thoughts from others and have no idea if I would let it go or not.

First rifle I ever owned was sold. First rifle I ever killed a deer with was sold too.

I try not to get emotionally attached to inanimate objects. Selling my 97 F150 after 12 years of driving was tough though.

Use that 78 action to build a rifle that you would hunt with

I guess it depends on how u feel

I am sentimental about my first rifle - I never plan to part w it. But now it is probably my best shooter - a 270 - Lov the way it shoots. If I did not like it - I possibly may feel diff about it - but since parents gave it to me - still think I keep it either way

My first deer rifle given to me at Christmas never shot great so it turned into a rem 700 blue printed with shilen barrel and hs precision stock.it was a decent pretty blued and wood gun but even my father is a tinkerer like me so I didn't sweat it to much.it shoots much gooder now! 5 shot ragged holes

My first rifle is a Ruger M77 7x57 and is still in my possession nearly 40 years after my father gave it to me.

Since I have no kids to pass it on to i guess I will carry it to my grave.

I did recently make a deal with my son.i told him if I sold his Ruger American he could have my m77 boat paddle In 260 rem with timney trigger I bought when I was 18 yrs old.its my best shooting rifle and I just added a new Leupold scope to it.
He agreed so it's his.he never was thrilled with the American and neither was I .he got tack driver to keep in the family but he likes a blued gun with wood stock so I might surprise him with something along those lines before long

Already have sold mine. Sold the first two rifles that I bought myself. I don't get attached to inanimate objects.

I sold the 1st one I bought, a Remington 74. Used the money to buy an a-bolt in 280. Hunted with it for years then as I acquired other rifles it just sat there. Was never going to get rid of it so I figured I'd make it something I loved again. John Gallagher cerakoted it and reamed it to 280 AI. It's bedded in a B&C stock, shoots ridiculously small groups and now it's one of my "go to" rifles. I've showed it off before and here it is again. As others have said, I'd make it something you really want.

I’m not sentimental about anything except pictures my son drew me growing up and cards from loved ones passed on. If you can make a dollar or 2 sell that sucker and make some new memories

Try the reduced recoil ammo and let the girls hunt it. Hornady, Remington, or my favorite HSM

https://hsmammunition.com/low-recoil/

My 12 year old is shooting HSM in the 6.5 Creedmoor. They are 140 grains and shoot very accurate out of the shoot I bought last year. She has shot other low recoil rounds out of her BAR 270 up until last year and they always performed well.

I traded my first 2 deer rifles and settled on a Remington 700 BDL in 270 win, which I still have today. Don't hunt with it much. It had a Rynite stock, which I got rid of for a Hogue full length bed block stock. Then I got a boyds thumbhole light weight stock on here last year. It has a Nikon Monarch 4-16x50 BDC scope on it and loves Federal Premium 130 gr BT ammo.

I've still got my very first shotgun which my dad bought me when I was around 12 or 13. A 20ga single shot Stevens from Woolworth. If I remember the price was $49.99. I still have it. It's not worth anything so I'll keep it and hand it down for sentimental reasons. None of my family deer hunted so I never had a rifle until I was an adult.
