I know I’m prolly peeing in the wind without a soil sample back yet..but. I’d like to top sow some more fert on a field here at the house when I start seeing rain falling. Got that ol red colored acid rich soul. What is usually a good fert to go with. Field is a little over an acre, planted in oats, brassicas, clover and some rye. Had 9 bags of triple 13 on it At planting. It is 4” high and sunlight rich, will get all the rain that passes above it.

You've probably got more fertilizer on it than it needs already. 650 lbs on an acre is a lot. If it yellows in the future, 100 lbs of ammonium nitrate will green it up, but I'd wait until mid Dec, if then

I would have used half that much fert. and been happy. It's just deer. Your going to burn it up if you add more I'm afraid.

It’s probably an acre and half. I’m not trying to justify over doing it. This property has been raped of soil fertility for 40 years. I’m not sure the spot that I planted had a green leaf of grass, tree, weed, or anything on it when I started. Solid sage when I seen it before this year. I added 5 bags of fertilizer the first time I tore it up to work it in. Then when I planted it I put the other 4 bags. When I get the road fixed to it I won’t worry with commercial.

If your ph is low, fertilizer won't do much good and you're just wasting money on it. Should spend that money on lime. Soil test should have been step 1

Didn’t do any samples but usually 100lb for my 1/2 acre plots they always come out good

I put a bag of N out for every 2 bags of seed. Then go back and hit it again when it looks like it needs more.

That's how I do "Fertilizer".

Looks like a dark green carpet. Maybe the real problem is your are planting too early and/or worrying about a soil test.

It's this simple:

Put enough down for starter.... Then when it looks like it needs more... put some on it.

I think we might need a fertilizer tutorial on here. All fertilizer is not created equally. It's about the total nutrients in whatever you're using. So many pounds means nothing, it's about N,P & K per acre. Most deer plots need 60-80 lbs of N per acre if you have decent ph. You can get by with less or more. Deer will seek out the most nutritional food they can get. If your neighbor has more nutritional plots, that's where the deer will go

I know exactly what Ron is talking about, and agree 100%. I spread a pretty good bit of fertilizer and litter in a year. But it gets soil samples taken. I’m not in the business of how green it looks I want to know what Ron was talking about, nutrition. Sample should be back any time, I didn’t plant the whole 10 acres bc I didn’t have the sample.

If it was solid sage that means you probably need lime more than fertilizer.

I’m still trying to figure out where 650 pounds came from out of 9 bags? Honest question always trying to learn this stuff because I certainly don’t know enough.

I'll take credit for it, Ramer math. I multiplied by the 13, from trip13, instead of 9. 450 is still a good bit
