2 main categories of beer are ales and lagers. Difference is the way the yeast ferments. Stouts and porters are ales. Overwhelming majority of beer sold in US are lagers. Overwhelming majority of craft beers are ales. A lot of what's going on now days is people experimenting with weird combinations of the 4 basic ingredients (malt, hops, yeast, water) in an attempt to differentiate themselves. End result is some weird ass, out of balance beers that don't really fit in any of the traditional categories. I love a good IPA but a lot of the "IPA's" out there aren't IPA's.
