Not just cereal but our discussion about cereal had me recalling my Great Grandmother Ruth. She was from Cleburne County and when I was about 11 she moved closer to family and lived right across the street from the little league baseball field. After late games if it was a weekend I'd just go over there and spend the night. She and I loved watching rasslin and the braves and stupid movies on TBS.
Anyways, she loved Special K with buttermilk and a few thin slices of Vidalia onion on top.
I loved that woman but I could never get on board with that mixture.
What weird foods do y'all recall some of your people eating?

I worked with an old man who ate an onion like an apple and drank a quart of milk every day for dinner.

Ruth always had them orange slices with sugar on them and a bowl of circus peanuts around too.
On the Buttermilk, my her and my Great Granddaddy would argue like crazy about rasslin being fake but she'd make him cornbread and buttermilk. He called it his Cleburne Milkshake.

Day old cornbread in a tall glass of buttermilk was among Daddys favorites. Arn Anderson would Spinebuster anyone who says wrasslins fake. I've been told my peanut butter and honey sammichs are weird.

My great grandfather’s favorite dessert was chocolate cake with brown gravy on it.
We never understood it, but when he passed, we asked my great grandmother about it. She told us that back in the depression when he grew up, they didn’t wash dishes between dinner and dessert. Pot roast was one of the cheapest and most filling meals families could eat, so it was popular. Chocolate cake was the cheapest dessert his mom could make, so when they had cake, she’d plop a piece down on his plate that had leftover gravy, and he’d eat it. So he spent his developing years eating chocolate cake with brown gravy, and it became his favorite.

Got in trouble one time for taking a mess of skwerls to my Papaw without the heads I had cleaned them and had them in a boiler when I gave them to him and his first question was "where are the heads?" My grandparents had brains of some kind often enough that I never asked what I was eating but just accepted they would be mixed in with eggs or some other meal

90% of America would starve to death today if they only had to eat what folks lived on during the Great Depression. There was not a piece of an animal wasted in these difficult times. Chicken brains, chitlins, mountain oysters, cow tongue, and blood puddings, just to name a few. I am a very old country, but I am glad we dont have to survive on these today.

Not weird, but I eat baked sweet potatoes for break at work this time of year. I have a case at work, no butter no sugar, just plain baked in the microwave. My favorite snack as a kid was sugar and butter on toast. I made it for my kids and they still make it. No buttermilk for me, I’ve tried….

My mother used to eat saltine crackers crumbled up in buttermilk.

My grandmother use to eat the feet of the chicken growing up. They were dirt poor so my great grandfather would get the breast, great grandmother the back only son the oldest the thighs and I can’t remember how the other 3 sisters split the rest of the chicken. They only had one chicken for all of them when they had it. She never had a chicken breast until she started dating my grandfather who’s family owned a chicken hatchery.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

I vaguely remember my grandmother eating watermelon rinds and orange peels. She made them look so appetizing that I thought I’d give it a whirl…wasn’t as delectable as it looked! Same with Grandaddy’s pipe and my babysitter’s powdered snuff, which I took to be cocoa powder. Nope!!
experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

I've had them several times myself , I didn't see what all the fuss was about though.
