It is what you make of it. If you're a crappy cook you're going to eat crappy deer. If you're a crappy cook you'll also eat crappy bow low knee. I've had both that were really bad and both that were really good.

The issue is most of you don't know how to treat deer meat. Not even just in cooking but in the butchering process. You have to treat your meat right. It needs to be trimmed properly, packaged the right way, aged the proper amount of time, kept at the right temperature, and each cut needs to be used for its best purpose. Everyone talks about venison being tough and gamey. Venison is not tough or gamey at all if treated right. Even a 6+ year old buck or old doe will be just as tender as a cut of beef if prepared right. You just have to know you can't treat it the same as beef because venison ain't beef!

I can cook some fine dishes with venison. Most of it goes to making sausage as by now y’all should know. I also mix ribeye trimmings with quite a bit of it now and grind into burger. It’s no where near as good as Axis but it’s still makes some fine meals. However I do love some good boloney. Had some venison boloney made at Woods Smoked Meats in Bowling Green Missouri and that was some great stuff. I need to try to make some.

I was not raised on venison, but developed a taste for it. I'll eat just about any wild game meat. I've eaten so much ground venison ground beef tastes funny to me. I get mine ground with no fat. Venison cube steak is awesome. If you put it in chili or spaghetti most people will think it's amazing, untill you tell them.

I don't share her opinion. A piece of fried strap and a cathead biscuit is a hell of a lot better than damn bologna. Not counting the burger and sausage.

Properly cared for and prepared venison is about as good as it gets. The limiting factors to an enjoyable meal are generally due to the following factors: heavily run(chased) deer with lactic acid buildup in the meat, rut stressed or older bucks(those antlers don’t taste good), over cooking with is true across most all meats, poor knowledge of how best to use each primal cut or muscle group.
Two things that never get fried in my house are venison or seafood.

We haven’t bought ground beef (except for hamburgers) in years. Any dish calling for ground gets deer. We usually put 4-5 in the freezer and we will be out of everything but ground by summer.

My mother in law hates deer but eats it all the time. She just doesn’t ask anymore 🤣🤣🤣. Did Korean BBQ venison Sunday. It was seriously good. Even to the non deer eaters lol.
