I was in a club like that for years. Primitive log cabin for a camp house. 7 miles off the paved road. Hauled in our drinking/cooking water. No electricity for years. Everyone gathered in the camp house and played cards under lantern lights. Had a big propane tank that fed a gas stove where the cooking was done. Great friendships were made. Power company ran poles through the woods and got close enough to bring electricity to the club. That was the beginning of the end for the club. Folks brought tv’s and spent more time in the campers. Fellowship fell off. Card playing stopped. Friendship wasn’t enough to hold folks in the club, for the newer guys. Old timers died off or got in too bad of shape to hunt. Half the lease, where the cabin was, was lost due to being sold off after the owner died. Camp was moved but it wasn’t the same. The rest of the lease was lost due to land swaps by the paper company. Dang
There is 2 different high fence. 1 small and one big! Mine was free range in the big pen and was not a breeder buck. Why does it have to be twisted around??

Just me and my dog in a yurt tent. Not as fun as camps in the past, but I get to bed at a decent hour lol. I used to be a member at a drinking club where people occasionally hunted.

My deer camp is not made up of many since it's a small parcel that the bank is nice enough to let me play around on for a small monthly fee - even though all are always welcome - but it's still the big majority of the reason why I like hunting season and all the work getting prepped for it. Something about going up there just makes you feel like you are free to let loose for a day or two...even though at my age, that day or two sometimes creeps into Tues/Wed trying to get fully recovered ![grin grin](/forum/images/graemlins/default/grin.gif) Choomolly’s definitely doesn’t help that! Our camp is only family that stays in our house most of the time, but have several friends up there hunting the same area including HallB. We enjoy the camp fire and a few drinks while grilling out. Turns out Hallb isn’t terrible at Karaoke after several drinks either.

I was in a club in Benevola, AL in the 80's that was absolutely the most hunter-friendly, good-hearted, good-time club ever. I hunted with a group of men from Chalmette, LA and they were all professional men-one was even the DA of that Parrish. We had a two-room cabin that had a kitchen area built onto it and a huge fireplace in the other end. I never came home without eating a new kind of Cajun cuisine or having some kind of a new drink! I had meals that I never even imagined could be cooked. We even had a "Chinaman" as they called him to cook for us and cook he did. This was all he did while he was with us. We managed to kill a few deer, as the area was not a very good hunting area according to numbers of deer. The members always loved the ladies and there were a few always hanging around the camp looking for one of the men to take her away. Anyway, the cabin came up burned, and I still don't know the exact reason why, but it did. The LA members found another area to hunt that was too far away for me, so that ended that. I sure miss those ole boys. Rest in peace Claude Mumphrey.
I can't stand a thief.

… The members always loved the ladies and there were a few always hanging around the camp looking for one of the men to take her away... That’s probably the quickest way to kill a club. We had a member once that would show up every Friday, sign out and in for three days worth of hunting, then leave. He had a girlfriend in town that he’d spend the weekend with and was trying to cover his tracks and make it look like he had been hunting. He wasn’t invited back after one season. Another guy brought his wife every weekend, which normally wasn’t a problem. They had just had a baby though so one of them had to stay at the camp with the baby, in their camper, while the other hunted. He was a psycho and thought every man in the club was trying to hook up with her while he was out hunting. They weren’t invited back either.
If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

I am lucky to have been in a group of friends who hunts the land of one of the members. We pay dues (but less than we probably should) but we keep all the roads open and fences in good shape. The owners family lived on this land for 4 generations and their old home place is now our "camphouse". We also pay for any repairs or renovations to the house. It is a 5 bedroom\ 3 bath house with central AC.
The men who I hunt with are my best friends. Our place was started as a very family oriented place. Wives and children were always welcome. We have had up to 24 people spending the night a few times but usually its about 10-12. We have had it for about 17 years.
Its 1100 acres and we started with 10 members but that has dwindled to 8 (a couple of guys moved away), one of the remaining 8 never hunts, but will come for the brotherhood. One only hunts turkeys and only comes then. Over the years we have had the place we have built a really nice barn and a cooking porch. We dont hunt as hard as we did when we were younger but some of our children do. Some of my best memories are sitting in a stand with my kids, or around the firepit.
My children dont realize how good they have had it. They think this is the way it is supposed to be but its rare for people to stay together like we have. Some of the "kids" are grown and have moved away but whenever they come back to town they always head over for a hunt or two.
It is a very special place.

It is a very special place. Sounds like a good set up. I’m in kind of the same deal but it’s mostly me and a friend hunting his place. The kids have gotten grown and busy but they show up every now and then. It’s like paradise to me. I live close and he’s 4 hours away so I keep an eye on things and do a lot of work.

It is a very special place. You would be correct they don’t have any idea how good they have it. I grew up in a couple like that but they always fell apart for different reasons.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!
