That’s a wonderful testimony of what can be done for us if we simply ask for help and truly want it. While I am not a church kinda guy I know without a doubt God is there for us and will do amazing things if asked for the right thing, which is his will not mine. I too was on the verge of destroying every good thing in my life, in my case as an active alcoholic. For years I was able make good money, maintain a successful professional career, raised good kids, great wife and outwardly it did not seem there was a problem at all with the fact I was doing it drunk from about 12:30 pm to bed time. At least in my mind. I would probably be doing the same thing right now except for the fact twice I have gotten about as direct a spiritual experience as one can have. First time I can only describe as being in the direct presence of something way beyond me and being told very clearly “you will go to treatment and it will be all right”. It was powerful enough I walked into the house, called my wife and told her I would be going, called my boss to arrange time off and called the treatment center. 30 days later I went in and it indeed was Ok. Got me 12 years of sober until I got stoopid for about 8 years. Second time He got me back on track by asking me two simple questions once again very clearly. When I answered the questions truthfully it was like “dang I gotta go back” which I did. The amazing thing was in both cases the desire to drink was completely removed which is pretty crazy since I was a fifth a day kinda guy. The point of this is JohnG if ya really want to get sober and stay that way AA or NA are pretty much the only way it will happen. I have been around this thing for 30 years and only in the rarest of cases does someone stay sober long time without them. In some cases church will do it but they are really two different animals. I had seen many folks come into AA get sober and decide church is what they need. And in a year or so they would be back beat to heck because it was not.
