You didn't mention what vehicle you are putting them on. My F250 has upfitter switches already installed in the dash for accessories. I connected my front light bar to one of these and although it wis a pain to wire up, it works great.
Whatever switch you use, make sure it has a light on it so you know it is on. Nothing worse than forgetting to turn it off when not needed and then blinding people behind you on the way to work the next morning. In this day and time, might lead to road rage.
And yes, you need a fuse or circuit breaker for sure.
I've got the upfitter switches and looked into what it takes to hook stuff to them, just watching youtube and reading forums...sounds like Ford made it a major PIA to hook up to them which I just don't understand. Totally defeats the purpose of them.

If you are stuck in the mud then hooking the lights to reverse won't help! And if you put them under bumper, then they will be buried in the mud! Best to just spell out "HELP" on your roof and keep them on at all times!

The switch that turns on my bed light also turns on my interior light. Which would make it useless for reversing bc having an interior light on while trying to backup in the dark, especially with tinted windows, makes it nearly impossible to see anything outside.
I’ve considered all the options….having it on its own separate switch is how I want it.
Gomer Does your truck have a 7 way trailer plug? If so the purple wire (on my truck) is for the reverse lights. If you use that you can add these same reverse lights to the trailer and they will come on when the truck is in reverse. The lights being at the back of the trailer will be of more use than an extra light on the bumper. If you use that option you could then connect the new bumper lights to the bed light (which controls the interior as well). I really only use the bumper light when I am locking a gate or doing something behind the truck. I love the etrailer site.

Why not just run them directly to your reverse lights on the tail lamp? Because I want to be able to turn them on even when the truck isn’t in reverse. And a 3- position switch to do On/Off/Reverse-only is way more trouble than I’m interested in I’ve never understood why folks hook them to their reverse lights. I just figured laziness to be the culprit, but who knows. 🤷♂️ Well if you only need them for extra light while in reverse that's a no brainer. If you need them on a switch and have truck bed lights why not just splice to them ( see above post ) I’ve thought about putting some on my truck just for reverse lights, but would never hook them to my reverse lights. Besides looking dumb, I want to be able to control when they come on. I don’t always need them when I back up.
83% of all statistics are made up.
