Non pro tip… do not mount these directly behind your rear tires. In heavy rain, they kick a lot of water and those LED lights can’t handle it. Use heat shrink connectors on all your outside connectors for the same reason. GREAT POINTS!!!!! You might consider connecting to your cargo light.

Any wiring should be fused. LED does not draw many amps, i usually run a relay with my switches, but not necessary
Let them walk ...and grow them big

Use heat shrink connectors on all your outside connectors for the same reason. Thanks….I’ll make sure they’re more toward the center. Also I’m going to ditch the connectors and solder/heat shrink all the outside connections.

Gomer on that harness you don't want to heat shrink the connectors on the light pigtail itself. That way you can change the light by just plugging in a new one if one fails and they are cheap. My lights have seemed to last with respect to the price I paid... I wouldn't worry about it much.
The switch only lights up if the lights are turned on.
IMO it's a good enough harness for this exercise. I have built custom wiring harnesses so I understand what the deal is here. There will be less points of failure with this one IMO. The only thing I have done when extending the leads on this harness is to away with the spade connectors and instead use a crimp butt connector that heat shrinks also put an additional piece of heat shrink over all that a couple inches long.
The only long-term issue is that the relay doesn't disconnect so that it can be easily replaced. That's not a deal breaker but would be better in design if that was clean.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Why not just run them directly to your reverse lights on the tail lamp?

Why not just run them directly to your reverse lights on the tail lamp? Because I want to be able to turn them on even when the truck isn’t in reverse. And a 3- position switch to do On/Off/Reverse-only is way more trouble than I’m interested in

Isnt complicated. Just time consuming. The led lights wont pull that many amps so wire size wouldnt have to be overly large gauge. I run wiring in black air line to prevent wear and tear. Split loom under the hood. Relay isnt a bad idea. Relay and base are less than 20.00 at most auto stores. Switches vary depending on if you want it illuminated or not. You'll only need to run a hot wire to the lights. It can get a ground from the body.

I just figured laziness to be the culprit, but who knows. 🤷♂️

I've done them with the harness and without on golf carts. The harness is the way to go, it's plug and play and cheaper than buying stuff seperately if you biuld it just like they do. Also, the light is off until the switch is on also atleast on all that I have done. Seems silly to not do it that way. Wonder if the folks that had a problem crossed a wire or something??

If you need them on a switch and have truck bed lights why not just splice to them ( see above post )

The switch that turns on my bed light also turns on my interior light. Which would make it useless for reversing bc having an interior light on while trying to backup in the dark, especially with tinted windows, makes it nearly impossible to see anything outside.
I’ve considered all the options….having it on its own separate switch is how I want it.

If you dont want to mess with a switch they do make Bluetooth led lights. Some change color too. It would help make it easier to be seen when you stuck next time Also if you are ever in the Huntsville area I can gladly help you. Did home and car audio professionally for years.

I hear ya, just thought id throw out some different options. I may have a switch you can have. I ordered some th marine lights for my camper shell, and i was going to wire them directly to the bed lights, just havent gotten around to it yet..

Gomer Does your truck have a 7 way trailer plug? If so the purple wire (on my truck) is for the reverse lights. If you use that you can add these same reverse lights to the trailer and they will come on when the truck is in reverse. The lights being at the back of the trailer will be of more use than an extra light on the bumper. If you use that option you could then connect the new bumper lights to the bed light (which controls the interior as well). I really only use the bumper light when I am locking a gate or doing something behind the truck.
I love my country, but don't trust my government.
