120 inch deer = Something like 16 spread, 20 inch mains and 8 inch G2s.
This is a math. I am 100% correct. If mass is 3-3.5 you are going to score lower but 8" G2s = small deer.
If you can't shoot that you have problems that's a 3 year old deer anywhere in AL - IMO.[/quote]
You can’t age a deer by antler growth anywhere especially in Alabama. I’ve hunted and managed some of the finest properties in west Alabama and generally there’s only a few 3 year olds that will break 120.

I’m going with 100” give or take a few. Tine length and mass hurt him.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

I will only add that these comments speak volumes... as to why the age structure of our deer herd in Alabama is NOT where it needs to be. We have a major problem with people judging AGE #1. That's the biggest problem in this State.
A 5 year old symmetrical 8 pointer that doesn't reach 120 might be a trophy in your area.... but it's STILL a 120 inch deer.
This is math.
Sorry. But that's the answer. Whether or not you view that as a "Trophy" IS NOT what we are discussing. That is another conversation.
I believe every piece of dirt in Alabama can produce better than 120". Sorry - that's my opinion.

A symmetrical 120 inch deer is not a mature deer even in AL. A near basket rack IMO. Small ear width 8 pointer will get you almost there, however in AL mass is the issue. Those mass measurements seem small however they can add up if they carry some mass through their entire rack. But typically in AL rack is thin.
Let's ignore mass:
120 inch deer = Something like 16 spread, 20 inch mains and 8 inch G2s.
A very average deer for Alabama IMO..... if you aren't shooting up the woods you should have the opportunity to kill one every year. If you never see one of these you need to re-evaluate the gunfire.
We killed 8 bucks this year all 4-7yr old deer not one will make 120 Location, location, location. His comment was a 120" deer was not mature in Alabama.

I have hunted all over this State from Jackson to Hale to Henry and have never hunted a piece of dirt I did not think would produce better than 120.
Now, if you want to pick at me and refute that 120 inches or less can = Mature. You ARE RIGHT. There are lots of deer that make it to 5 and never see 120. I concede that. I have a 5 year old that wouldn't score 100 that lives by the house.
My point in that comment was simply that each and every hunter in this State each and every deer season should be able to have the opportunity to kill a 120 inch deer and I stand by this statement. That is not a big deer even by Alabama standards - also IMO. If it is where you are hunting OK , but that does not change anything for me.

Wow. You either have a lot of jealous folks on this forum or folks don't have any idea how to score a deer.... Congrats to the hunter that bagged a damn fine buck. You're right. And the only thing that matters in this entire thread is that it was one damn fine buck. I said what I said.

I admire your optimism but I don’t think the average mature buck in AL will hit 120”. I’m fortunate enough to hunt several really good tracts that have produced 150”+ deer. This year on 6 different properties I didn’t have a single buck above 130”. One tract alone has/had four 5+ yr old bucks this season. I’ll admit that a good portion of the blame lies on those shooting the 120”+ 3yr olds. But high grading young deer aside, I still don’t think the “average AL” buck will ever make 120”. I hunted one property right next to my house so it was super convenient to run cams all season. In 5 years I never got a single pick of a 120”+ buck on that property. Note- I personally saw a 160” 10pt two miles from that spot, so I know larger deer were in the area but they didn’t use that 60-acre tract.
You're only as good as your worst shot-

If that buck is only in the 120” range, I’m gonna tell my Taxidermist not to score the wide 10pt I killed. I’m gonna be very disappointed in the score. Not that score matters. I have never had a buck scored before.

You might be right. I'd love to find out. I am not the kind of person that thinks everyone has to agree with me.

In the 3 counties I’ve done most of my hunting I’m tickled to death with 120” deer and I’ve only killed a handful that are 16 inches wide or wider, most of what I consider big deer on our places are 12-15 inches wide no matter how old they get
