We finally got on one, strutting in a out of the way place. Would NOT come to calling. We almost got close enough for a shot and 3 hens come strolling in behind us and he walked off putting. Hunting with kids is tough….😂

Took my grandson on his first turkey hunt this morning, Winston County youth hunt.
I hooted, bird gobbled on the limb, we got set up, soft called, second bird gobbled other one cut him off they hit the ground and came in quite. They put on a show for us but he just couldn’t get on one before they seen movement.
He is fired up now. Think I have a new hunting partner.

#1 gone at 7:10 this morning Hale county, he was the fearless leader of a group of 4 longbeards he had a 9” beard and no spurs. That’s the first one I have seen personally with no spurs.

I worked too hard to end up with a miss at 1055 after he landed about 70 yards from me off the roost. He proceeded to the neighbor''s pasture for couple hours. . He gobbled 200 times at least. Finally got in front of him, and screwed up the shot.

10” 1 1/8” at 11:30 in Russell county after the rain quit.

40 years ago today at 14 years old I killed my first bird, a jake, with my dad. We doubled up, he got the longbeard.

Thanks dad.

Finally getting around to posting pics of mine from this morning.

Checked several spots in the rain at daylight with a buddy and only heard one distant gobble before finally making our way around to where my bird was. He started gobbling on his own around 9:00 or so and I was able to get within about 200yds of him. He was up on the side of a hardwood ridge across a creek bottom from me just gobbling his head off. After about 30 mins of messing with him I finally cut hard on my mouth call and the hen that was with him got mad. A few minutes of cutting back and forth with her and she ran up to about five yards from me, spooked, then ran off. Not long after I saw his fan coming over the rise at about 40yds and the 20ga took care of the rest. Dang good morning.

Got a nice long beard headed back to the roost this evening. It was late around 6ish. I saw him and his brother this morning- they busted me right after the rain stopped. They both were headed back to roost for the evening. For some reason, I decided to name them Bobby Joe and Billy. Bobby Joe took the dirt nap this evening, Jimmy’s day will come at the hands of my dad 🤣 Nice 10 inch beard, good spurs, and got to kill him in my Mr Fox vest. First opening day bird for me. I’ll post up pics tomorrow after church.
