The mayor is a Democrat. All you need to know to stay the heck away. Are there any cities with a population larger than 100,000 that have republican politicians? Mobile, AL Huntsville

I forget the year, but I had a friend murdered in an alley off of Beale Street. Beaten to death by a baseball bat. Late 90s. Memphis and Jackson have both had thugs and violence explode in area over the past 20 years.

Back in the early 90s we had a cabby pull up and tell us to get in, we were in the wrong area just south of Beale.
I was photographing models for a modeling school in mid town. Dude walks up and started talking crap about my equipment. I had a friend with me that was a big ole boy. He stepped in and the guy left. Not to far from Memphis State in nice area and middle of the day.
Wife’s family is from Germantown big huge Catholic family, most have left. Her sister still lives in a bad area but she lived on the street for years so I guess she has street cred. She’s better now but still.
There’s a reason most folks that can are moving east and south. Sadly urbanites are following so the distance is gaining.

I have an office in Memphis that I visit regularly. When visiting, I stay in Southaven or Olive Branch, MS and just make the commute. Memphis is a chit show. This is what I did also. Usually Olive Branch. We stayed in Southaven one time for a baseball tournament and the patrons of the hotel were less than desirable. I kept my head on a swivel the entire stay.

There’s a reason most folks that can are moving east and south. Sadly urbanites are following so the distance is gaining. I grew up in Bartlett. Most of my family and friends live in Bartlett, Germantown, Collierville or Olive Branch. There are a few places in the actual Memphis city limits that I would absolutely live without hesitation......but I cannot and likely never would be able to afford those areas. Mostly just "East Memphis"..... - a box within 240/Poplar/Walnut Grove/Chickasaw Gardens - South of Park between Colonial and Cherry Rd's - or a box within 240/Poplar/Shelby Farms/Germantown There are a few really nice areas a little further west around Midtown too, but they are A) SUPER-expensive and B) you can be in a really nice area and literally go 1 block and be in a straight up hood. There's also some extremely nice places downtown (on Mud Island and down in the "South Bluffs" area) but they're really expensive and (I think) gated.

There's also some extremely nice places downtown (on Mud Island and down in the "South Bluffs" area) but they're really expensive and (I think) gated. Gated with security guards is my understanding. Friends up there have some friends that own some of those condos. A good friend lived south of collierville in MS and dealt with hood rats from Memphis. His wife’s grandma was almost beaten to death by thugs that did some yard work for her earlier in the week. If y’all recall is asked for prayers here for her. Some of Nans grandkids were in law enforcement, all those thugs seemed to resist being arrested 😝 I got lost in orange mound before during daylight. Not good. Back in the early 90s I stopped to get gas around 2am as I was headed over to Arkansas to goose hunt. The station was taken I’ve by a bunch of thugs and they just took what the wanted. Memphis is the epitome of social engineering geared for a certain demographic. The outcome is consistently the same

It’s sad what it’s become. Had many a good time up there. Wife graduated Memphis State back in the 80s got her Masters at Memphis UT Used to babysit the kids of the FedX owner as they lived across the street. She has a lot of good memories there but rarely goes back. When she does it’s always during the day
I’m always carrying if there
Honestly I’m carrying here too. Had to run off some dang homeless folks that were up to no good here in Tuscumbia. They were checking out houses, mine included. SOB came back 3 times wanting to know why I was so mean to him. Called Tony and let homeless guy answer some questions. He was full of lies.

I don’t think it’s much worse than Birmingham. I avoid both There is actually not a high level of crime in the restaurant/entertainment districts of Birmingham; which seems to differ from what has been said about Memphis. Now, make a wrong turn to the "bad" areas; different situation , like most cities. I had a co-worker, that lived in Memphis; got mugged/robbed on Beale St. He moved.

Yeah Birmingham may have some bad areas but Memphis is on another level. Chicago comes to mind. The level of gang activity is something else.

“Skyrocketing crime rates are a cross-national issue that is aggravated in certain hotspots. Read on to learn what America's most dangerous cities are and the crime statistics that separate them from the national average. 1. Detroit 2. Memphis 3. Birmingham 4. Baltimore 5. St. Louis”
2. Memphis Violent crime is a problem in Memphis, and it's only getting worse. The city has the highest violent crime rate in the South and the second highest rate in the nation at 1,943 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. But what sticks out the most is Memphis' property crime rate at over 6,000 incidents per 100,000 residents, nearly triple the national rate.
3. Birmingham Birmingham, Alabama is next on the list of the most dangerous cities in America. In 2018, the violent crime rate was five times higher than the national rate at 1,911.5 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. In addition, the murder rate was the third highest in the nation, with an average of 42 homicides per 100,000 people. But it gets worse. An overwhelming amount of the crime reports in Birmingham (70%) were aggravated assaults. The remaining criminal activity was mostly robberies.
Not sure how new this article is it’s the first one that popped up. But it don’t seem like much difference to me?

Yeah Birmingham may have some bad areas but Memphis is on another level. Chicago comes to mind. The level of gang activity is something else. Seemed like there were reports of random shootings on I-240 every few days, but haven’t noticed it as much lately. Got a few friends that have had multiple crazy 240 sightings and happenings, but they travel it almost daily.

It went on much longer than a few days closer to a few months according to friends living in the area. Me guy works at FedEx and has to drive 240 to and from work.

No way BHam is ahead of at Louis. Maybe when compared to ass kicking versus shot Heck Atlanta in the morning side and buckhead areas are having home invasions by well armed gangs. Has been for years and buckhead wants their own security and police department NOLA has had serious problems before Katrina. It’s a lot worse now. Had friends working the hurricane cleanup that left because of it and they were making bank. One friend befriends some of the gangbangers so he was good.
