My son (18) graduates this coming Tuesday. He has a normal job at night, at Publix and makes good money for a high school kid. He recently decided to start a lawn care business in addition to his normal job. Mowing, edging, trimming bushes, weedeating, weeding, pressure washing, etc…Man his business has blown up. He’s got a special secret niche that he has focused on and it’s really paid off. This week alone he has worked only three days and has made $980.00 and hasn’t worked more than 4 hours a day. I’ve fronted him the equipment since I already own everything with the deal that he keeps it gassed up and maintained. If anything breaks he fixes or replaces it. It’s been a lot of fun teaching him about business, bidding labor, accounting for expenses, negotiating and how to read people, etc…. I’m proud of his work ethic and his willingness to get after it.

So here’s the question for you? Are you expecting him to go to college and potentially kill the entrepreneurial spirit in him or going to let him lean into this while he’s young and see what he can do with it? College will always be there, I’d urge him to really lean into this.
I’ve said before, landscaping type of business may be the easiest business to get into and dominate, most that I’ve seen are failing miserably at treating their lawn business like a business.
The fool tells me his reasons; the wise man persuades me with my own.

He’s got a wrestling scholarship at Montevallo so yes he’s going to college. We’ve been talking about it some and his two younger brothers will probably run the lawn care business when he’s in school. We’ll cross that bridge when time comes.

Tell him to be careful wrestling at Montevallo. That school seems to have an unusually high number of fruit loops.
