If the dog lived it lived, if it didn’t I would bury it. Snakes are ruff.

It be's that way sometimes.

Yeah there was some forced perspective in that photo because it looks 10 ft long but I held it above my head and it touched the ground. Probably right at 7ft. My wife didn’t go to the club with me anymore after we found that one

7 feet? That's about one foot longer than the biggest on record.

We lost a rat terrier several years ago to a rattle snake. Benadryl and bacon grease did her no good. It got her with one fang on the snout and one below the right eye. Dead in less than 18 hours. I killed the snake that evening when I got in from work just a few feet from where my wife said the dog was when she got hit.

I hope your pup makes it JB.

Hound hunting in the swamps around here, we get dogs snake bit pretty regularly. Usually if it's a cottonmouth, we just give them some antibiotics, take his collar off if he's bit around the head or neck and rest him up. He's usually better in 1-3 days. We only had one ever got bit by a rattlesnake and he was dead by the time we got him back to camp.

I'm hopeful that he pulls through alright. It's never good to lose a good dog but it tougher on kids than adults.

Benadryl has minimal effects. It does sedate them. Low dose aspirin can help with the pain. Other than that. Pulling the collar if there's swelling in the neck is about the only thing you can do. I carry mine to the vet. None of that, other than pulling the collar is gonna keep them alive. Usually if they're gonna die, it's pretty quick. Few minutes to a couple of hours.

Usually the swelling will sink down to the neck from there. Make sure that collar is off

The swelling will move is what I'm saying. From face to neck.
If the bite is in the top of neck it'll sink to the bottom of neck.

It's hard to diagnose without actually seeing the dog. But it sounds like he's going be alright to me.

Our min pin got bit by a copperhead last year. I was weed eating around where it happened. He got him on the snout. We took to emergency vet and he got anti-venom. The next morning all swelling went down and he was fine.

Now he has a black looking growth on his snout where he got bit.

It was expensive, but he is a huge part of our family so we were not willing to risk it. He is a small 10 lb dog.

That's terrible. I'm not a vet, but the eye is togher than you'd think it would be. It'll actually heal pretty quick. I think as long as the optic nerve doesn't get damaged. I'd look for cloudiness in a couple of weeks. In a day or so, I'd kinda test his vision on that side. Get so he can't see movement with good eye, and move your hand towards wounded eye, see if he notices or blinks if you move towards it. You could test it now, but keep in mind that there might be some blurriness and hopefully the vision will improve from what it is now.

Benadryl (for the venom/antihistamine), clean the wound gently with gloves if dog will let you (snakes eat rats for a living), antibiotics for bacterial infection (again, they eat rats), and a steroid ONLY IF VET APPROVED)….and keep PLENTY of fresh water handy for them.
My hounds that got bitten regularly on foot or face when I grew up on the river…they liked going out on the pier in the sunshine, and drink water from a bowl.

Unless it’s a big rattler, they’ll probably sleep on-&-off for 2-3 days with their body working it off.
