Advance Auto Parts was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

Never heard of a auto parts store asking for tips, that’s nuts unless they installed the parts for you.

When I go to check out somewhere and they spin an ipad around for me to swipe my card and sign, I automatically know I'm about to be asked to tip for something I've never been asked to tip for before.

Then that should be an installation fee, like it used to be before they used the "free installation" advertisement to get you in the store.

Nope. Had them working on changing a battery in a service truck. Boy said he could get the Hot cable to come off. Stuck he said. He was tightening it. Had to show him 🤦‍♂️

Kidding about Advance Auto, but that's honestly about where it is.

I think a lot of it is that businesses just can't get people in that range of skill set to even show up for work. Plus the businesses can offer employees a reduced salary and say "Plus Tips!" on the job offer.

I know we, as Americans, rag on Europe and their culture a lot, but from my understanding tipping is MUCH less common there than it is here. And if that's the case, I'll tip my hat to them (pun fully intended)

Yup, it's brilliantly "evil" from a business perspective.

It gets the customers to subsidize the wages of the employee and the employer gets to tell the employee, work hard/give customer service and you'll get more tips.

I went to get take out at a local sushi chain and was charged an automatic 18% gratuity for take out. I will never be back.

Also, I think its why a lot of cashiers/businesses get their noses out of joint when you pay in cash.

That's exactly what is going on.... in Alabama I am pretty sure we go by federal law. You can pay someone less than minimum wage, as low as around $2/hr.... if when you include their "tips" they then reach the minimum.

So by tipping you are subsidizing their business. It's a total racket. But a simple concept.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

So what would be the unintended consequences if we decided to buttlite tips everywhere. What would happen sequentially if we as a nation just decided one day we weren't going to tip any more? I've had this discussion before with friends. There was a lot of head scratching involved. (maybe some etoh too).

Tipping is definitely less common in Europe.

However....an automatic service charge is very much a thing there now.

We were in London in March...every single restaurant we ate at charged a service fee from between 12.5% to 20%.

It's printed right on the receipt, and it's non-negotiable.

It is everywhere, ever since covid. Subway wants you to tip. Jersey Mikes, Chipoltle, etc. I don't understand why I need to tip a pizza delivery driver when they charge a $5 delivery fee.

Whatever happened to the concept of if we aren't there spending our $, you wouldn't have a business?

The pizza thing is one I've questioned a lot lately and nobody can seem to give me a clear answer. They charge a delivery fee but are clear to explain that it is NOT a tip, and ask you to tip the driver on top of it. The drivers drive their own car and presumably pay for their own gas....I thought the tip WAS the delivery fee.

When we do order pizza, it's from Domino's a mile and a half from our house....I just go pick it up. As Fred would say..........

I prefer not to tip people in places where tips aren’t customary and tip pretty well for places where it is. Like a sit down restaurant.

The pizza delivery fee is what covers the insurance, gas, and vehicle wear, for the car and driver. Mostly its insurance. Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, etc... have all been sued hard by insurance companies over the years for drivers getting in accidents.
The driver gets about $1.00 per delivery for gas and vehicle wear.
