I knew a guy who used to sit down at a Mexican restaurant and tell the waiter “more chippy, more tippy, no chippy no tippy.” If they kept the chips and salsa full, he tipped extremely well. If they didn’t, he wouldn’t give chit. I saw a similar situation take place, and the fat “owner of the town” told the polite waiter he want TWO bowls of chips and TWO of them itty bitty bowls of salsa kept FULL!!! It looked like he tipped the guy like $3. Chips stayed full, salsa’s stayed full…and when he went to leave, there were about 10 little dudes around his truck scratching their heads, that promptly scattered when he walked out right after me. Somehow the truck had the wheels on it, sitting on the ground…with no tires to be seen anywhere. Don’t know how that happened, but there it was.

So what would be the unintended consequences if we decided to buttlite tips everywhere. What would happen sequentially if we as a nation just decided one day we weren't going to tip any more? I've had this discussion before with friends. There was a lot of head scratching involved. (maybe some etoh too). We pay > $10 combos at Burger King.

I went to get take out at a local sushi chain and was charged an automatic 18% gratuity for take out. I will never be back. Waffle House does that. What I wanna know is who in the world gets WH takeout? I can't imagine picking it up and taking it home and eating cold eggs and waffles and whatnot. I have been in there and seen the kind that do that. Let's just say it is the kind with a very un-refined pallet. Or maybe it's the kind that has kids that we don't want to drag out on a saturday morning to get something to eat and they are just down the road. Geesh.

I think some of the issue is the default setting on the card readers at businesses. But, when everything was shut down back in 2020 and all restaurants could only offer take out, there were local restaurants that the servers were getting tipped by customers because those folks weren't able to serve tables inside, but they were getting your take out order together and most folks around here didn't mind tipping them for "carry out" from those places that were normally a dine-in place because we wanted those places to be able to open back up and knew that the wait staff was in a bind.
But, otherwise, I generally tip at least 20% unless the service is terrible at any sit down restaurant where a server comes to take your order. I may over tip a bit since I tip on the total (tax included) but I appreciate their working and me not having to clean up the kitchen.
We went down to Acme Oyster House in Gulf Shores in Sept/Oct of 2021 and we ordered an appetizer, two entrees and I had at least one adult beverage (probably just one since I was driving). Anyway, the total was was in the $80-$90 range and I left gave the server a $20 bill and he was so stinking appreciative. I told him I appreciated him coming back to work since many places around that time were having a terrible time getting enough staff on hand to seat all their tables.
I tip the girl who does my hair, my nails and my esthetician if they are not the owner as well.
I will also tip the pizza delivery person on the rare occasions I have one delivered (usually when travelling and staying in a hotel).

I know we, as Americans, rag on Europe and their culture a lot, but from my understanding tipping is MUCH less common there than it is here. And if that's the case, I'll tip my hat to them (pun fully intended)
The French are insulted if you tip. The price is included.

I'm an over tipper. If my drink doesn't is kept topped off, I'm gonna hook the server up. I'm not anyone special and don't feel as if I should be treated as royalty just for wandering in an eating establishment. If the food takes a while to come out, that's probably not the servers fault. If the music is a little loud, that's not their fault. If the steak is tough, that's not their fault and if the Food is expensive, well, that's not their fault either. I watch servers and see how they are handling more than just my table. There's a joint in my town that charges $9 total including tax, for a Meat and 3 with desert and drink. The food is excellent and they are often short staffed. The wait staff that is there hustle and do as best as could be expected in the fast paced environment. I tip $5 every day that I am in there. Sometimes I eat breakfast in there as well and tip $5

The French are insulted if you tip. The price is included. A 15% service charge is REQUIRED BY LAW in France. You're tipping, you just might not know it if you don't look at your bill.

If I’m walking a counter line to order, that tip ain’t coming their way. There’s a couple reasons why I am willing to order from a countertop and not from a waiter/waitress at the table. It’s cheaper and no tips.

It was pointed out to me today. When the tip is calculated on the bill say 15-18%. It’s the total bill not just the food and drink and taxes then the % is added Not sure all places do this. Y’all check it out. Most of the places I have been it is based on just the pre-tax total.
