The pizza delivery fee is what covers the insurance, gas, and vehicle wear, for the car and driver. Mostly its insurance. Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, etc... have all been sued hard by insurance companies over the years for drivers getting in accidents. The driver gets about $1.00 per delivery for gas and vehicle wear. Insurance companies are evil. I get older and so does my truck, and yet my rates never seem to go down.

One of my regular pizza stops charges 4% more for card use so when you pay cash it's cheaper. And yes the wait staff is tipped in cash and it's always a "Thanks for the tip." In reply.

We don't have any food delivery way out here in the country where I live, but if we did I would tip pretty high considering what it's costing drivers to do their job with their own vehicle.

I went to get take out at a local sushi chain and was charged an automatic 18% gratuity for take out. I will never be back. Waffle House does that.

I have been in there and seen the kind that do that. Let's just say it is the kind with a very un-refined pallet.

I briefly worked as a waiter in college, and for quite a while delivery driving. Tips are earned. But at the same time, don't go to a sit down restaurant, order delivery, valet your car, or go to a strip club, if you can't afford to tip well.
Nowadays, I get a kick out of leaving people really substantial tips, when their service is exceptional. I always keep some cash on me for this reason.
I also have no shame in leaving no tip, if the service is terrible.

My only requirement is my tea glass stays full. If you can do that I'm a very good tipper. I have left $50+ tips for good service, but that's just my thing. You can just leave the pitcher if you want. If my glass does not stay full or it's a dude with a man bun you are gotting hosed. ...

I'm through with eating out. Found myself in town at lunch, stopped in a decent Mexican restaurant, had a basic item off the menu, $26 by the time I got out the door. Not worth it. I was thinking about that this weekend. My family of four winds up just over $100 just about every time we go somewhere sit down. It’s just too much. I need to start paying attention and ordering water more when we do go out. I think drinks are their main money maker.
